    Hey all,

    I've been using Norton IS for the last few years. It works well but I find that it slows down the pc a lot, especially when booting up.

    Could anyone recomend a good alternative?? Something that won't slow a machine down and has anti virus and a firewall.

    Im currently using Bitdefender , not bad at all I have to say , does not slow down the PC like Nortons and doesnt ask for a reboot as often as norton does either.

    Free and even when combined, are unlikely to hog as much resources as NIS.

    ( "&&" = And. "||" = Or.)

    (I personally wouldn't bother with Windows Defender)

    Assuming your using XP, inbuilt WinXP SP2 Firewall + Avast Anti-virus (or AVG) is just about all you'll need.

    Windows build in Firewall isnt all that great, ( only blocks incoming traffic i think)

    Anti Virus take a look at AVG, Very good regular updates and seems to score quiet well in any anti virus software reviews ect...

    Firewall I like Sygate Personal Firewall, I know they have been taken over by Nortons now but the firewall is still great, atleast until they break it or load it with extras that slow it down :0

    do a search here on the forums, there are a few good threads on this subject,,

    PS also consider running an anti spyware program aswell Ad-Adware is nice.

    The inbuilt Windows Firewall is actually pretty good it by default blocks all incoming connections that combined with a NAT router is all you'll ever need for the average user.

    If for whatever reason you want complete control over outbound programs in others words whatever is connecting to the net from your computer then yes a third party firewall would be needed though the Vista firewall will have this feature so no need for these kind of things any more at least with Vista.

    Firewall technology hasn't really changed in a long time that's why you see more and more third party firewalls tack on somewhat unescessary features in an attempt to keep people interested.

    I have the Windows Firewall and Tiny Desktop Firewall, both work great and I have never had any problems.
