Game chat what's the point?

Having recently started playing pp online I see no benefit in getting involved in gamechat. I seem to get a lot of abuse from what I see as seriously derranged/poor/mentally unstable people some examples some weirdo called housejunkie went on and on even though he bet me in an all in situation he analyised it to death in such a way that I asked him in the end if he was so good why was he playing $3 mtt's. Another guy was really pally pally telling me what he had so I returned the info until i realised he was gathering info on me. Then last night in the $10 qualifier for the Irish open, 2 guys from this website started slagging the game calling it Paddy Power bingo and playing some weird cards. I ignored it keeping it tight was dealt kk then one of them went all in kq os and filled a straight!
The only advantage I can see is to watch if someone goes tilt.

Sounds like you have the right idea Pat. I only use it from time to time trying to send people on tilt. It does work sometimes especially at start of MTT's when there are usually a few maniacs at the table.

I always chat in live games at the table so just find it natural to do it online too.

Under certain conditions you can use chat yourself to put someone else on tilt. A nicely timed 'nh' when someone has been hugely outdrawn can work wonders. Also handy to see who is hassling someone else, who is talking a big game etc. Also handy to see who might be blatantly colluding (it happens).
In short, don't bother chatting if you don't want to, but its a good idea to leave it switched on.

Armani, what you mean by colluding?

I often play against some friends online and we would be chatting away in the game but i would want to knock them out or take their cash just as much as anyone else.

On the bubble of an $5 STT before XMas, I saw 2 big stacks discussing which of them would call my shortstack all-in i.e. First guys pauses, 2nd guy says 'You call'.

Loads in them in those games Pat, especially the rebuy games. At start of $27 rebuy games, you will often see people all in with any ace or any small pair. It gets ridiculous and you can get some terrible beats but if you can catch a few of the maniacs, you can build a nice stack before the freezout part of the game starts.

lol, that was me and another lad that posts here :D:D:D I presume by weird cards you mean him knocking me out with 72o vs my AKs.. flop 772.... lol

I wouldn't take it too seriously, we were only having a laugh! If someone starts annoying you, just block their chat.

I think the chat is a good feature. It adds that kind of human element to the game thats missing from online poker and just reminds you these are real people you are playing not just the computer. Also as previously mentioned you can gleam extra bits of info on players. How many times have you seen someone say "I just cant catch a break tonight none of my hands are holding up". That player probably wont be in the right frame of mind and probably will not be playing his A game, he might even be tilting. So its handy for things like that.

Also it helps you seize up your opponents. If someones being very talkative on the chat and acting all friendly hes probably not to serious about the game and is just there to have fun. So it kinda gives you a glimpse at your opponents frame of mind.

a lesson learned... straight from the book of roryc......it pays to be a moron on ppp

lost the chips in the end though... went all in again with 72. This time hit the trip 2s, but lost to a flush... lol

if you really want to freak out your opponents, try typing some random 'code' into the chat box

EXECUTE command SP_show player1_HoleCards is always a good one!!
