Another Ram Question

I have a HP PC at home.
    It's a PIII, 500Mhz PC.

It has 2 slots for SDRam & these have 2 64MB chips it them.

I was testing 2x256MB chips in it last night & realised that the PC has a limited max ram of 256MB (i.e. 128 in each slot)

My question is:- what controls this limit?
Is it the bios & if so, if I get a bios upgrade will it up the max limit so I could take full advantage of the 2x256MB chips?

Or is this hardwired in the motherboard, or something?

    Thanks

It should be able to take more than that O_o
It could be that they are both double-sided modules (or one is double-sided), and the pc can only take 2 or 3 sides worth, because it interperets each side as a "bank". I had a similar problem on my PIII system - it had three slots, but I couldn't put more than 2 sticks if one was double-sided.

Thanks Zilog, but no:- both are single sided (& there's only 2 slots in the PC)

Anyone any answer to my original question:- What on the PC controls what the maximum Ram supported is?

    Thanks SickBoy

Can this be upgraded in any way so that I can increase the max ram supported?

Bar replacing the motherboard with a later model - the answer is no.
