Fantastic Amp. Pretty much all of them TSL's are great amps. I use a 6101LM(they took a few channels from that to make the TSLs becuase of its success) and its brilliant

The Classic Marshall sound is either an SLP or a JCM800, depending on your preference. The TSL is okay, but it isn't the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

Yeah I know the distortion I'm looking for is the jcm800. Unfortunately I cant afford it. I like that the tsl has 3 channels too. Want a bit of versitility in the amp

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Search ebay for jcm800 comboes. you can pick up a 50watt combo for a nice price, and some of them are two channel models.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

Arent they very limited though in sound (or so I've heard). And to get that great distortion I thought they have to be cranked fairly high to push the tubes. Any idea how they take to pedals. Around how much would it be for a combo. Cant really afford the head and cab option.

Also I've confirmed a price of €650 on the tsl602 and really cant afford to spend much more so given that price how does it seem for that amp?

Get the 6101. Read into it at least. sounds like what your looking for. Marshall claim its the most expensive amp they ever made and most versatile

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

the anniversary 6101? Just had a look there. Is it a 100w amp? Got any links to somewhere to buy it

I like the price of the tsl602. Its €1300 on thomann and apparently its in perfect condition so for €650 it seems like a good deal.

I'm thinking of picking up one of those lite ash strats to go with it so I cant really go much more than €700 for the amp

The tsl is a very good amp. Is the 650 a s/h price?
I may be able to point you in the direction of a better bargain (550)
And of course, there is the nameless individual who is selling one for 900 here ;)

Edit - the cornford is a little belter of an amp, but you wouldnt gig with it unmiked. Plus it doesnt have anything in the way of effects loops etc. Tonewise though, fantastic. A guy here has one.

I've read very good reviews of the Cornford.

    Ever considered an Engl?

My ENGL is definately not just a metal amp, I use a Thunder 50 and it's ever so versatile, lovely crunchy blues and rock tones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

Hmm I never even thought of an engl but if I could find one second hand at a good price I'd deff consider it. Yeah voodoo the tsl is s/h. Wouldnt pay 900 s/h. Its only a thousand on gak. Send me a pm bout the one for 550. Worth keepin it in mind. I dont need to gig with this amp and I was looking at the harlequin as its only 6w tube. Loud enough for the house (hell my micro cube is loud enough) and I also hear they are a fantastic amp. I was thinking of picking up a gt6 at some stage and using the 4 cable method so an effects loop would be handy but not essential. Many second hand engls going these days?

My last amp was a Peavey Classic 50 btw. Great amp but couldnt get as heavy a sound from it.

JCM800s?? Most would say a lot more versatile than a TSL. The JCM800 has an MV so it's as easy to get distortion as with any valve amp. Most valve amps will sound a little thin if the volume is too low.

I've recorded quite a few JCM2000s - DSL and TSL heads and combos. I can't rule out the player factor, but the combos all sounded a lot more "solidstate" than the heads (which I found odd, since they should be more or less the same). But even the heads were a bit harsh sounding - just imo. The TSL in general is pretty modern sounding, and I wouldn't presume to judge anyone's tonal preference in that regard... but "Classic Marshall" it is most undisputably not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

Yeah I'd like a jcm800 but they are just too far out of my budget. Preferably the amp should cost €500-€700 and the guitar should be €500 (tempted by the lite ash strat)

OT: What are lace sensor pups like? Much of an improvement over tex specials or the SD Alnico2 pups?

Anyone know of an engl thunder or screamer combo going second hand?

    Ebay perhaps?

    or this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

I already checked ebay. As I said above, I'm looking for something for around €500-€700 second hand  . That new thunder you linked to on ebay is cheaper on thomann  . And the first one I'm not interested in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

Just get a new one! Its only €759! Its a rarity to see ENGLs goin cheap S/H.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

Yeah but if I was spending that much on a guitar I'd pay the bit extra and probably go for the screamer. I'm waiting for my friend to get back to me with prices anyway. Might be able to get me a new engl a little cheaper (hopefully anyway)

In a price/performance ratio, is it worth going up to a thousand euro for the screamer if I can get a s/h tsl602 for about €550?

Anyone play both the thunder and the screamer? Opinions?

    From the Engl website:
    SCREAMER 50 COMBO E 330
If you want to play smashing rock with tamed gain, this should be the amp of your choice. Killing tube tone and incredible handling ease are the trademarks of this amp-line. Sparkeling clean, harmonic crunch and powerful leads are the goodies you’ll get from our SCREAMER.

The Thunder can manage much higher gain, and still do classic rock, so it's a lot more versatile than the Screamer.

Yup I read that on the engl website. But also says it has a "heavy lead" channel in addition to a lead, a crunch and a clean

Have you played the screamer before karl?

    Nope.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

It gets great reviews and i love that their seems to be a happy medium in these amps for playing both classic rock (what I play mostly) and also metal (which I play occasionally). I've been looking for an amp that can cover both. My peavey classic was great for the classic rock sound but didnt have enough bite, even with an od808 pedal. I'll wait and see what kind of prices my friend comes back with. They certainly seem impressive

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Well, go into Instrumental at some stage and give 'em a go there and then. Trust your ears tbh, reviews are all well and good, but in the end it's your ears that'll tell you whether or not an amp is for you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

Yeah I'll deffinitely be trying out whatever amp I decide on. Might pop into Instrumental at the weekend. Are they the only guitar shop that has them? Any idea of the prices in there (just for a laugh)

ive a tsl100 its a great versatile amp, it is more of a modern sound, But older marshall tones can be gotten the newer amps are better at gettin nicer overdriven tones at lower volumes, im a tone freak and the versatility of the tsl is great, im forever in arguements about dsl's or tsl's but the tsl is exactly what u want in an amp and does what i need...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

Just found some sound samples of the screamer and thunder here

    http://rocksolidamps.com/sounds.php

    WOW. Both sound fantastic

Sorry but I'm gonna have to call bs on this.
How is the thunder more versatile exactly?
I played both and they both can get the same range of tones but screamer has more channels.
    The screamer was plenty heavy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

I'm hopefully gonna know very soon whether my friend can get the engls any cheaper than thomann. I'm tempted by the screamer due to the fact that it has reverb but more due to the VLS feature and the z5 footswitch that can be used with it. All depends on the price really. If i can get the screamer cheaper than on thomann I'll go for that. If not I'll prob get the thunder

You can get a Thunder reverb y'know, nearly €200 cheaper than a Screamer, the Thunder has three channels too, Clean-crunch-lead. I dont think the Screamer has reverb though, the ones i've seen didn't.

GSC,howya i own a 70's marshall master mark II 100w halfstack, basically it's an older jcm 800 and it's a stunner it can do clean,it takes pedals great and i'm pretty sure it'd wipe the floor with any TSL,when i donw engineering in tbmc i recorded some tsl's and wasn't at all impressed by them...very thin sounding

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

Glad I bought the engl screamer then ;) started another thread with the new guitar and amp I bought. Tis around there somewhere. Hows the od808 goin? I might actually pick up another one now that I'm getting another tube amp. Still have a maxon chorus cs505 if you need a really good chorus?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,110 ✭✭✭sei046

Pick up the 6101 second hand on ebay. Its so versatile its not even funny. Great little combo( you can get a stack too)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

I think if I was gonna go second with a marshall now I'd stay away from the newer stuff. I'd prob look for something along the lines of a silver jubliee combo if I could find one. Saw one on ebay a while back

    Here's a stack version: http://cgi.ebay.ie/Marshall-Silver-Jubilee-2553-JCM-25-50-LIMITED-EDITION_W0QQitemZ7405787736QQcategoryZ10171QQssPageNameZWD2VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Edit: Just found a combo. These are great amps if anyone has been lucky enough to play one
