    Hi guys,

For the paranoid fear minded type out there ;) I;m holding a knife fighting seminar on the 15th. I have a few places left. If you're intested in the details you can pm me.

    Here's the basic blurb....

In this course you will learn Knife Avoidance against criminal attacks, the 21 feet / 7 meter Rule, the 12 Angles of Attack, the Four Primary Blocks, proper weapon handling and stances, and the Jim Wagner Knife Disarm Rule when distance is not an option.

This course is unique in the fact that you will have a chance to see how criminals attack with knives, terrorists, various ethnic groups, and even techniques taught to the world’s militaries in order to know how to defend against such attacks.

You’ll be surprised at just how easy it is to be a knife fighting expert, and you’ll get there fast with conflict conditioning drills such as The Feeding Drill, The One-for-One Drill, and The Freestyle Drill; not to mention Walking the Gauntlet, Leap Frog Drill, and others. Whatever you learn in this course can also be applied to other weapon systems as well: improvised edged weapons and impact weapons.

if you need anymore info pm or check out http://www.self-defence-ireland.com/knife-survival.php

Is this the same course they're holding up in Carrickmacross in August with Jim Wagner himself but that's advertised in Irish Fighter for, I think, €70 for the day (€150 for instructor's certification) ?

    Hey uberpixie,

    Hahahah! So tru.

What if I take the same course on the same day, but take two places for 300 euro, will I become a really "super dooper" knife fighter then?

I guess Bob Kasper who is one of the worlds finest blades men, should now throw in the towel, or else go on one of Boru's courses:D .

    Later,

    Bagg.

Man, this is the kinda sheet thats dangerous and also gets people who train in weapons based arts a bad name when claims at becoming an expert (AND doing it fast) are the norm.

as edged weapons are so dangerous to train, would it be possible to 'test' which training method is best? any ideas anybody?

I like your thinking, you'd be right at home in LUMA: "when it's this expensive, it just HAS to be good!" :D

Tape sandpaper to a trainer blade so you know when you get tagged? :D
I've seen some fancy knives that give an electric shock when you get hit as well. Or you could just use "live" blades

:p ...you know...you never know....I could be teaching some great and mystical techniques to transform you from an average martial artists into a lethal kung fu superman.....or ...just maybe I could be teaching something you could apply to your own training that would be useful and informative....just a thought. No, that was silly...lets just stick with teaching people to be Neo and ...:D

Oh and judo mick I'd be happy to offer a discount for boards memebrs. Pm me.

regarding the whole knife expert thing...let me see if I got this..."the pointy end goes into the other guy ;)".....

here's one for you....how many ways are there to attack someone with a knife? and subsequently how many ways can you defend. Send your answers with a self addressed envelope to....lol.

John, just on testing techniques. I often use the No lie blade, basically its a hard plastic training knife with a "foam" edge. You then apply a layer of lipstick to the foam. Shows up every thime your tagged - and you can get tagged alot.

We'll also train with a blunted bladed which really freaks people out- the feeling of real steel tends to add to the weapon focus effect.

Finally don't forget to use lots of fake blood. It adds an element of realism to the apperance and often just the look of it changes the way people act. The other benefits of it are that at first its really slippy so you can't really do any complicated joint locks - even holding on to some ones arm proves a challenge, then it gets really sticky. Its also great fun and looks really cool in photos!

    Just a couple of ides!

apparently you can buy training knives, that electro shock you if they make contact....so I hear anyway... so that could be one way.

a good hard plastic knife and some protective equiptment can do a decent simulation. and I've attacked fulll blast as the attacker , full on attacked with hard plastice knife (which willl hurt bad) and I have been beaten by the knife defence defender. its not perfect but is a good start! and very alive!

one example, was I went full on to attack, and the defender jumped back, and stomped me full blast in the solar plexus, I dropped, tried to get up to attack again (I was ripping to be honest) and I fell in a heap.

another full on drill, repeated fore arms smashing into my knife arm, left me in terrible pain. and I do not give up easy, I tell you that.
I remember so clear, on the 10 th smash I got, I want to drop the knife, ... I held on for another 10 smashes, while I repeatly and violently tried to stabb, and I had to drop the knife... I never did a Wagner course, and I assume this came from wagner, as I is definately not a KM move.

so thats a true full contact example. and as I say a real good start...

to learn its got to be full on!

If any one is really interested in Knife defence that really is the best around (nothing is fool proof, when it comes to blades), check out everything you can by a guy called Bob Kasper and, or go on the S.T.A.B. Course (strategy & tactics against blades).

Kelly Mc Cann has some very good knife defences based around Bob Kasper's teaching. You can get his WHOLE combatives series for $118 from Paladinpress.com, this covers a huge array of material (not just weapons) and he is also considered to be one of the best combatives guys around.

Other very influencial guys to check out would be: (these guys have books and articles, much of it available on the web, etc.)

    Bob Campbell
    Ken Pense/Mel brown (Nashville S.W.A.T)
Bob Kasper and the various instructors at GHCA
    Col. Rex Applegate
    Col. Biddle
    John Styres

    Good luck,

    Baggio.
