im 19 and im only opening a bank account now since my past jobs have been cash in hand and i didnt need an account. Anyway i went to open an account the other day in BOI. I needed two forms of I.D: Passport and recent household bill/pps statement.

i had my passport and my P60 with me but apperently my P60 wont do, which i dont understand since my pps number was clearly on my P60.

my problem is that i dont have any bills under my name and i dont have anything else that will do......

is there a way around this? someone help PLEASE!!!!:)

Try the TSB at most you may only need a parents signature. The BOI and AIB only ask for 2 ID's

is there a way around this?

Did you ask the people in the bank? There is normally ways to work around these things for people in your situation

I had a real problem because my first name is not the name i use or on letter/bills addressed to me , i had passport driverslicence creditcard phone bill and i work in the bank in the ifsc lol.
All banks need forms of address and id due to new eu regulations to do with money laundering etc.
best thing to do it to ring the bank in question and ask if ur momy comes down with her id and addresses and get the persons name.
Or again find out if the person in the bank will accept a letter from your work(head of human resourses) to write and post a letter to them stating who u are , ( will take a week though) .
(these are only 2 of a number of possibilities that can work)

When i was opening an account with aib I had the same problem, had a passport, birth cert etc but they still wanted a bill in my name, obviously i didnt have one so i was told to go to my local social welfare office and get them to send me out a letter with my pps number on it and that would do.

alot of bother just for a bank account imo!!

can anyone recommend the best bank to open an account with? i know they all say they are the best but what is the best in your opinions and why?!?!?

try tsb or national irish bank, they do free banking, think you have to have a certain amount in ur account though, worth lookin into

I would either go with TSB or Bank Of Scotland.

I currently work for BOI and there a load of ****. so i got a BOI acc and a permnant tsb acc plus a AIB acc.... So i can see which one is best to me. So far i find Permnent tsb good to me.

Also a letter from your employer and a passport should be enough for you to open bank acc. All you need to do is explain ur situation to the people at the bank, they are more than understanding.

A 19 year old who can't open a bank account without doing the runaround. The workers and leaders of tomorrow... remind me to drop dead around midnight...[/cynical snooty moment] Why don't they teach people how to do this sort of thing in schools? Or do they just not pay attention?

Your certificate of tax credits should be sufficient to open a bank account. You should have received one by now.

The banks' hands are tied in this respect. They are required by Irish law to obtain these pieces of I.D./Letters before giving you a bank account.

What I'm saying is that you couldn't just ask them what it is you need, get it and come back to us? I recently had to open a new bank account under the new system, got it first time. I'm not taking a go at you specifically, more a generation... dunno if that's better or worse ;) Flying off the handle and calling me names about it brings to mind the phrase "digging a hole", but anyways, all this is off-topic.

I work in the bank and I do see this quite often...unfortunatly, this is due to The criminal Justice Act 1995...You can thank in part our friend Martin Cahil for this as the law was brought in as a massive clamp down on organised crime...If you scroll down the page there is a list of acceptable forms of Id..also have a complete list in work which I'll bring home on Monday and post it up for you...Your tax credits for 2006, If your full name is in the phone book, Any insurance cert. that covers the current policy (motor/house/life insurance), motor tax renewal form, garda card...You can get a written letter from a utility company confirming your address, anything from social welfare...some of the more common ways.

On that list by the way it says that address on driving licence is acceptable, I work for AIB and that's not accepted when getting finance...I don't know about opening an account though.

Good luck :) I'll have the list for you next week.
