I remember reading a good article in one of the papers last year about narrowing the field in the national but I cant remember the detail's.It was very interesting something about weight, basically a horse above a certain weight has not won in 30 odd years and if the horse is to light it has not got a hope.

He went on to talk about age,he gave a bracket (it could have been 6 year old to 11 year) and the same thing the winner will not come from outside this bracket.

Does anybody remember the detail's or it could be common knowledge among seasoned gambler's.I don't bet much on horses but I come out of the long grass for big races and big meetings so being able to narrow the field helps me big time in a big race like the National.

I think I know the article... I remember reading it a couple of years ago, I may be wrong but the points that I remember taking from it were that 9 yrs old was the optimum age and to be weighted between 10-5 and 10-13,

    No your not

That tells how much you know about horseracing
I backed 8 of the last 12 nationals by form

Form counts, amongst other things, in any race. My "pin in the ppaer" comment was an attempt at irony tbh, and in response to the OP's initial question. I believe, and somebody correct me if I am wrong, that of the last 10 nationals, the FaV has won 3 times? From memory Hedgehunter, Earth Summit and Rough Quest. I can also remember a few rank outsiders winning, Red Marauder and Royal Athelete spring to mind.

The problem, for me anyhow, with the national is that the course is so tough and when the ground is soft, the going is so unpredictable.

This is also the big Mammy Money day for the bookies, with everybody in the house having their €2 e/w bet on the horse that ticlkes their fancy, name, number, colour of horse, jokeys name, owner's name, trainers name all having as much influence on people as form, going, handicap to those "in the know".

I rarely back anything in this race, I don't particularly like the race tbh.

So in complete answer to the op question, go on form, go on a name you like, stick a pin in a piece of paper or you can just send your money to me. With the latter option you also get the warm fuzzy feeling that I have put it towards a pint of porter, and that way the 2 of us are getting some enjoyment out of it ;) .
