Who is the best bank to apply for a loan with online?
I am currently with BOI but I am thinking of changing banks and was also wondering who is the best to bank with?

Well im with Permanent TSB at the mo. I used to be with BOI but i found there bank charges were f**kin ridiculous mine were €65 for 3 months no way was i staying with that so i decided to get a switch current account from Permanent TSB. It's a good bank very reliable.

After a screaming match with a manger in BOI I decided to change to AIB.
No problems with them yet, apart from applying for a credit card... that took them ages.
I just had to get away from BOI as soon as possible. They were just ridiculous, and managed to get me into a lot of debt with all their messing about... without telling me!!

BOI have free banking - just apply for it and keep a certain amount in your account each month and there is no bank charges.

But why should you have to apply for it. Typical BOI tbh, apply for everything!

Where do you find out how much you've been charged in bank charges?

AIB have recently announced free banking if you use their online service..

BOI have a crap online service by the way.. compared to AIBs...

you should go through your bank statements, theses charges come out of your account every 3 months for BOI. Should be printed as 'interest' or 'bank charges afaik

I've been using AIB's online service for quite a while now, never had a problem with it.

I'm pretty sure it should appear in your bank statements.

Their online plus service is excellent much better than their 365 service

I've found BOI to be incompetent at every turn.

Ulster Bank are superb as a local bank but their online banking system sucks, so then I guess its AIB or Permanent TSB.

aib online was down there for a few crucial times i needed it there a few days ago.
i was also then in line for 20 mins before a guy came out from behind the counter and said the system was down and that there was nothign that could be done, basically had to leave like

Other than that though AIB have been good to deal with

Right then, I think I will switch to AIB. Seems to be better all round. Thanks for the advice.

aib are fab. it was just a shame when they brought in charges but now they are getting rid of them thank god! the throw the money at you! (well for loans anyway) they are always calling me asking if i want a loan.

about 5 years ago had loads of hassle with Bank Of Ireland, moved to AIB and to be honest couldnt be happier, their online banking is brilliant from applying for loans, paying bills, tranferring money, creating standing orders to even share dealing and their phone support is very fast, effecient, courteous and knowledgable (nothing worse than talking to someone who doesnt know what they're at - usually through to an operator in about 30 seconds - altough once had to wait for 5 minutes on saturday)

Havent heard of that & doesnt seem to be anything on their site, where did you see this?

I was with BOI in my teens but found them a bit backward, I moved to AIB just after college and I've been getting on grand with them. Getting a credit card off them was laughable and took almost 5 weeks (some verification was needed and I was never told) when it should of taken about a week. But their Internet banking is a brilliant service, never a hastle and their phone operators know their stuff, if there's anything you can't handle with the internet banking they'll do it for you over the phone.

If they'd only followed PTSB with free bank charges (think they'll have to soon enough though), then I'll be a very happy camper.

Thanx a mil man i just rang up BOI and applied for it now. Terms are that 1) you bank a/c is always over 500 and 2) you use banking on-line 3 times in the 3 months. If you dont meet these requirements theres no fine or anything you just dont get free banking for that 3 month billing period.

National Irish Bank are good. I'm with them and their current account has no charges (even if you don't use online banking). Their online banking is pretty good. It lets you set up new accounts to pay into without having to phone up like you have to with AIB. AIB's looks nicer though!

There is actually no need to ring up AIB 24hour to set up a new account, you can do it very simply from your account. It's all explained very well, if you just click on the help/FAQ button.

It's terrible value. AIB do the same except without the 500 in your account. The 500 in your account could then be sitting in a Savings account at 3% meaning you wouldn't be losing as much money.

You get a list of charges at the end of the year, I think they are sent in your month statement too. Always found BOI online banking to work well for me anyway, its free also.

    More info from RTE.ie
    RTE.ie wrote:
AIB is introducing free banking for its phone and internet banking and debit card users. The bank says that customers with personal current accounts who, each quarter, use AIB phone/internet banking and their AIB debit card for one transaction will now qualify for free banking.

The bank says that this is the first in a series of initiatives to be introduced by it in the coming weeks, which will focus on key areas of importance to personal banking customers.

Free transaction banking will start on May 27.

AIB already provides free transaction banking for students and customers over the age of 60.

To answer the OP's question on charges, I get seperate "Fee Advice" statements in the post once a quarter, detailing what the charges are and "will be debited from your account on xx-xx-xx date"

But not anymore - yea! :)

So you are, in effect, loaning BOI €500 of your money, free of charge for 3 months, to qualify for free banking

Whats the betting that they'll make more in interest using your 500 than you would by moving it to a deposit account...? :(

How do you get the online plus?

Also afaik, I think BOI are upgrading their online banking in the next few months.

Never had a problem with BOI (Although, before a few people jump down my throat that know me here 'my daddy works for them' :p )

Ulsterbank Online banking is a bit of a disaster. Still, with that said, I got a letter from them today saying that they are overhauling the system to improve it.

Really?! I didn't get such a letter :( Well....perhaps tomorrow. And yes it needs an overhaul ;)

But seriously, I don't think it matters which bank you are with here. I've tried nearly all of them and have run into difficulties each time. It seems like a matter of chance to me. And everyone you talk to at a bank tells you different stories anyway.

got that letter from Ulster Bank today. Finally we will be able to log on from any pc to check our balances without having to save the file from one pc and put it on to another.

I'm with Permanent TSB and their online banking is relatively basic but does all the things really that you need. Also it's worth mentioning that PTSB's telephone customer service staff are very helpful and friendly (in my experience). I have an account with AIB also and their online banking service is far superior in all fairness.

My only gripe about PTSB is the music they play in the branches... ah.. it's horrible. :)
