IPOD shuffle problem

I am trying to format my shuffle as it is not playing and itunes is not reading it. I tried to get into the shuffle through "my computer" but it just stalls my computer. How do I format the shuffle. Thanks and apologies for being so technology ignorant

Have you run the "iPod Updater" program that you installed at the start with ITunes? It has an option to "restore" to factory settings.

There is a new version down loadable from the apple website. Just did this yesterday myself.
