I have a HDD in a USB external enclosure which shows up in the Device mgr but doesn't show up in My Computer. I have connected other Mass storage devices (IPOD/Flash memory drive) through the USB port before & never had any problems using them through My Computer & was expecting this to be the same. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Forgot to mention that there's data on the Drive & I was trying to salvage this. How can I get the drive to appear in My computer with a drive letter.

Can you see the drive in the Disk Manager? Right click My Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management

Your partition table is probably shagged. You will need some recovery software. Or some professional data recovery.

Thanks for all the help so far.
No its not showing up when you click My computer> Manage.
Is it difficult to recover data from the disk? I tried connecting the disk as a secondary slave in my PC & it just caused XP to freeze on start up. Thing is I'm trying to recover some college stuff for a friend. It was running on Windows 98 & wouldn't start up in safe mode. Just the win98 logo start up screen. Any other help would be greatly appreciated.

Aye. This means the partition table is shagged, and you'll need some type of recovery tools to find the stuff. Search for it, within this forum, as it was discissed before the weekend.

If it is not showing up in Disk Management then it could be more serious than just the partition table. It could be hardware failure.

Does it spin up? Is there any noise from the drive when it is connected?

    Cal.

Yes it spins up. When it was in it's original machine it started up as far as the win 98 logo screen. It's a pretty old HD, early 98 & Only 3GB.

Does the BIOS recognise the drive?

    Cal.

Bios recognises the drive. When I had it in as a secondary slave in my own PC the IDE card identified it & continued to boot up intil it got to the black XP logo screen & the boot up didn't advance any further.

Sure you had it set as slave?

Sounds like there is not much else you can do yourself on it. It could be worth handing over to a professional to take a look at. It all depends on how important the data is to you really.

What I was trying to recover was college stuff for a mate. Thanks again for the help anyway.
