Five girl gamers (aged 16 - 17) in Ravenna, Ohio found a website showing how to make life size replicas of the item boxes found in the NES classic Super Mario Bros. They made some boxes and placed 17 of them around their town for April Fools. Unfortunatly some residents who didn't know the meaning of the boxes thought they might contain bombs and called the police and bomb squads were dispatched only to discover the boxes were empty.

I just looked through the orginal site the girls got the idea from http://www.qwantz.com/posterchild/

Their actually not the first to do this, a good load of people from different palces have done it. Here's a secletion of mario boxes in the real world.

Santa Ana, California, USA: This one is really good cuz they used a clear line string that is hard to see so the block looks like it's just floating in the air, i love to take a run and jump at it,haha

The following is from the guy who made the site so not sure where it is, also below it are cut outs of items to put in the boxes

Casper, NY, USA: This is funny, someone had previously put an item box in this location and came back to find the boxes had been taken and replaced with coins

I reckon it would be a good idea to start places some of these around towns and cities here in Ireland, :D

people in the states are in trouble because it's america. imagine sticking a box with a questionmark on it in the middle of belfast in the 90's... same idea.

though in dublin etc., that'd be pretty funny to see. slightly uplifting to anyone who gets the joke, too

Haha, deadly. The coins one is brilliant.

Such paranoia. I doubt any terrorists would dress their bombs in colourful carboard boxes if they wanted to be taken seriously.

Couldn't put them in the are where I live though. Sure, some will get the joke, but others, scangers mainly, would ruin it, by saying tearing them apart, or with graffiti, or maybe even eggs. :(

What I find hillarious is the picture of a bomb squad guy opening a question mark box.

Incidentally, Linkdude, I think dressing a bomb up in a colourful child's box would be a typically sick terrorist stunt.

The bomb squad should have used their heads to defuse it instead of controlled explosions. How about bob-ombs placed around central park. You'd probably get a great laugh out of that, well worth a stint in guantanamo.
