San Fran to NY

We're hoping to travel from San Fran to New York at the end of the summer and instead of getting an internal flight a few of us want to drive across as much as we can. has anyone done this and if so, what are the main places to see along the way or the best route? thanks

Well you could drive up the coast along the Pacific Highway to San Simeon (illiam Randolph Hearsts pad (with it's 1/4 of an acre swimming pool) and then go up north through Monterey etc to Sf.

Or you could take the bus Green Tortoise not Greyhound. It's more "alternative" so could be a bit more fun. http://www.greentortoise.com/california.coastal.crawler.html
