Fuel Gauge on the blink

My car(Fiesta Zetec) is 9 months with the only problem a dead battery (a mystery but only happened once several months back)
Now however the Fuel Gauge is malfunctioning and alternates rapidly between full/empty.
    How serious can this be?
Have I to take it into the garage immediately?

your choice really. Its only there to warn you when your petrol is low and to show you how much petrol you have.

Its not like because your gauge is jumping between full, empty and full that your petrol is magically dissapering and re-appearing again, its still there!
If you think you can gauge it mentally - then fine. If not get it sorted
