    Hello all,
Our Dell Desktop computer, around a year old, has started acting strangely.

When it is powered down through windows the hard disk access light and the fan keep going indefinitely (at least over night). The monitor powers down automatically (its recieving no signal).

Even holding the power button down to manually kill power doesn't work - they just stay on.

Did an error check on the hard disk, checked for viruses etc. But I have no clue what's going on. Is this a hardware failure or something?

    Any ideas, suggestions gladly recieved.

    Cheers,
    Quad

I too had this problem on my Dell 8400, which is 15 months old. I had recently installed AVG and another free software called "protector plus" for a 30 day trial. Go into MSCONFIG. Start > RUN and type in MSCONFIG, Then go to services and click hide all Microsoft services and remove any programs you have installed recently by unchecking the ✔ . Do it one by one and eventually taking out just one of them will fix the problem. Don't uncheck any Microsoft service, by hiding them this will prevent you accidentally doing this. Give this an attempt and if it fails do a "System Restore" to about a month ago or whenever it was shutting down properly last. To do a system restore, click Start, > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. It could take any thing up to half an hour depending how far back you are restoring it. Best back up any files you have created between here and the restore date. I have seen it wipe a few of my files when I restored last.

Running XP home edition with service pack 2. What are you thinking?

Cheers for the advice netwhizkid, I'll give that a wack. AVG is installed but its been installed for months (this problem only cropped up in the last two weeks). I really don't think anything else has been installed - primarily because the computer is on dial up and downloading anything takes too long for anyone to bother (but I'll check anyhow).

Is it by any chance trying to update windows with the update feature over dial up ?
Windows update with service pack 2 downloads updates in the background and then when you go to shut down it stalls the shutdown until the update is complete which would take forever over a dial up ??

Just a thought anyway , try turning auto update off and see if the problem is gone !!
