    Hi,

I've been thinking about getting one of these :

    http://www.boysstuff.co.uk/product.asp?id=12822&random=323375881&cid=63&scid=65

or something like it for a bit of flying fun.

Does anyone know if they are any good, or are they not worth it.

I expect to get what I pay for which is very little, but I just thought I'd check here first.

    - Altoid.

    No offence intended ...
    but...
If I had to fly planes like that I would give up model planes.

IMHO You need to look at hobby planes and not toys. They fly with style, elegance. But the toys limp around, it could be said that they "do what it says on the box" but well ...... we want to enjoy flying them if you know what I mean.

Meanwhile take a look at this:

    or this

    http://gliderireland.modelisme.com/images/videos/L213AWeb.wmv

    or possibly this

    or this

    http://www.multiplex-rc.de/cms/vorschau/upload/d_videos/minimag_5mb.mpg

and some more video clips here..

    http://www.greenhobbymodel.com/movie.html

They are a mixture of the kind of planes that can fly well without breaking the bank. Tho the actual large models are very large, and we usually fly smaller ones, say with 3 to 5 feet wingspan, here in Ireland..

The point I am trying to make is that a toy plane is like a car with no tyres. Sure it goes. Sure it costs less. But it just barely does the job. But do you really want one? Not if you can have a car that goes properly for a little more? A model plane is the same, and it lasts longer if it can fly well.

Thanks for the response and some of those clips are staggering, especially the indoor acrobatics I didn't think flying like that was possible.

The problem is that with budget and time restrictions I am after something 'cheap and cheerful' that I don't really care about ripping up in a tree. So RTF suits me.

I'd love to get a proper 4-channel plane and learn to fly it, but that would be too much of a time investment at the moment.

I just was wondering if these are a laugh for a flight or two now and then.

These little things looked like a bit of fun that could be easily modified in a few minutes, or even have the parts canabalised for quick homebuilds.

I know the limitations they'd have but I am willing to work with that and was wondering if anyone had any experience with them or any like them.

    Thanks,
    - Altoid.

Well - If you are looking for disposable (in a tree - whatever) the ones you linked are in the price range.
In a local club where I fly - I mention this in case it makes a difference - the 10 year olds have better models.
Dublin Kestrel Model Flying Club Take a look at the pics and see who is flying what.
Mind you - these get repaired if they crash, and we would climb a tree to get them down if they stopped up there :)

It really depends on what you expect it to do.

    Try one of these...

Ive had mine nearly a year it's great fun! Just be sure to find a big enough field
and take it out on a calm day.

Mine has survived several crashes and still going strong...

Looked like a Raptor 50....Have just bought a Raptor 30.....after seeing that clip I think I will be taking it easy starting off.....crashs can be costly things with heli's..;)

The joke around a local club about helis:
you need a black bag if you crash your plane - to bring the bits home. But if you have a heli you need the black bag and a shotgun - the bag for the bits and the shotgun to put it out of it's misery !
