Can somebody help me catch some fish? I've tried casting off from the beach, from the bridges, from the riverbank, but nothing seems to happen. I try to cast near a fish, but it just swims away. If by chance, I get supremely lucky and it floats towards my (lure?) nothing seems to happen.

Walk towards the place where the fish is. If you run they'll swim away.
Cast to an area they're facing, if the hook is close enough to them they'll go for it.
Once they're at it it'll bob a few times, this varies with each fish. Eventually it'll be pulled under and you then need to quickly start hitting the button (b-button i think, which ever you use to cast)

As above, but just tap the screen with the stylus as soon as the float is finally pulled under. (I never bother using the keys for AC:WW, I find it much easier to use the sylus for everything)

Comes down to personnal preference, whichever you find easier.
I feel the buttons are more accurate them tapping the screen but that's only me.
