whats the best bit of grappling advice you've ever had?

never assume your guard is passed until its passed, a lot of people give up side control and start planning how to escape this position before the guard pass is fully completed (made sense to me :o )

    or

roger gracie : "bicep slicers from spider web don't work" lol

"Learn to become your own coach" JK to me in my early days. Actually a great philosophy for life imo. Thanks John.

Martial arts in general- Me Da- Its a passtime at the end of the day, so why not do the thing you want to do most?

Paraphrasing ideas mentioned by several instructors at seminars/classes over the years..

"Don't get cought up in the opponent(s)" - comes up time and again.

"Control the space the attacker needs, not the attacker directly" - similar to the idea of 'negative drawing' in art.

    negative-space

Hmm, don't get the art reference. Bit obscure!

That's a good way of thinking.

Don't be afraid to grapple with someone who is half your size but able to tap you out ! Find out what he/she's doing better than you. Leave your ego at the door.........

What matters is the work - Margaret Mead
and basically - Champions are first on the mat and last off it, everyday.

'stop thrashing around like a maniac' Dave Jones told me that one, still getting the hang of it but it was good advice.

A guy called Rob who is a purple belt from England showed me how to bottom out of armbars when a guy much bigger than you bunches you up, Im 66kg so that was happening a lot.

Clive's choice words make mine seem all the more relevant...:D ;)

    Good point. Good analogy.

    For Roper
Standup Ring fighting example... Rather than attacking the guy in a straight line to keep em in a corner- attack via his escape spaces to control em. Don't know how to relate it to the ground though...

I'd like to hear what the best advice JK ever heard was, seeing as he's Ireland's top dog in zhoo zhitsu.

Clive's post is just brilliant, I pity his girlfriends!
