In exactly 3 days, ill be 21. exciting, i know. besides the obscene amount of drinking that'll be going on, i plan to use the large amount of cash that a 21st brings in to upgrade my PC.

As such, i come seeking advice. here's a short list of the most expensive components that ill be seeking for this new PC.

    ATi x1900 XTX 512MB,

AMD Opteron UP 165 Dual Core San Diego 1.8GHz 2MB Cache (Socket 939) - Retail, (will be oc'd to 2.4GHz)

Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe Crossfire (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard,

    G.Skill 2GB DDR HZ PC4000 (2x1GB) CAS3 Dual Channel Kit,

    Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache

those are just the essentials. jaguarcompsys has given me a quote of about 1500 ex vat for the lot. what other computer retailers are there in ireland that'd stock this type of kit? im gonna ring up komplett and get a quote from them.komplett and jaguarcompsys are the only ones i know of. any others?

also, reckon that'll be a nice setup? its mostly for gaming purposes.

Why ring komplett? Use their website. Have you got the skills to build the PC yourself, or do you know anyone who can do that for you? You could probably save money that way. Buy the person who builds it a few pints ;)

I get most of my stuff from Komplett, except for RAM which I get from www.shop4memory.com - they're based in Celbridge and delivery is fast and free, and they're priced very competitively. You could try www.overclockers.co.uk too.

There's also marx computers (www.marx-computers.com) but they don't appear to have much in the way of high end stuff, Peats (www.peats.com) - lots of stuff but expensive, and IT Direct (awful website that's been broken for ages, since its broken i've no idea what they have in stock/available).

That list comes in at around the 1700 euro ( inc VAT ) from Komplett , Was the quote from Jaguar in sterling ? They are an english site after all ( or are they ? ) anyway , it looks like Komplett are cheaper , not surprising really , for a big order like that they generally are.

I never overclock , so Im no expert , but jumping from 1.8 to 2.4 seems like an awful lot to me , are you sure thats safe ? That processor is not cheap , and neither is that motherboard , be a shame to see them melt before your eyes , it wouldn't just be the smoke making your eyes water !!!

There isn't much of a worry for overclocking those opterons. You seem to be able to get obscene speeds out of them on stock cooling. 2.4 should be well in its range, as there's a lot of threads floating around about people getting 2.8 with minimal cooling.

Most mobos have overheat protection anyway, I overclocked my AMD 64 X2 3800 from 2.0ghz to 2.6 no problem, temp only went up 5 degrees.

Im not going to push it anymore, not without better cooling.

Dont forget the 24" rims yo! Aye make sure you have plenty of cooling if you are going to try and overclock it, wouldnt like to see all that new stuff overload.

yup. 2.4 is a safe OC even on stock cooling. opteron's were designed for servers i believe, so they dont generate as much heat. komplett seems much better than jaguarcompsys in terms of price. i was able to get a nice list of components for 1489 euro including vat. (2GB of ram from memory-configurer.com @ 239 euro is included in that price) the 1500 quotation from jaguarcompsys was excluding vat @ 21%. on 1500, thats 315 euro. (i know...ouch)
Anyways, komplett seems like a nice choice at the moment. if anyone can recommend a better stockists, im all ears.
