Four killed in separate car accidents

    03 April 2006 14:52
Four people have been killed today as a result of separate road collisions.

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a body in a burned out car at Rassan, on the main Dundalk to Castleblaney Road.

A car went out of control and crashed off the roadway and subsequently went on fire.

The incident was discovered at 9.30am today. There was one occupant in the vehicle at the time and the body of the deceased has been removed to Louth County Hospital, Dundalk.

Gardaí are trying to identify the person who died.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to contact them at Hackballscross Garda Station on 042-9377142 or Dundalk Garda Station on 042-9388400.

Gardaí in Co Westmeath have renewed their appeal for information on a traffic accident near Athlone in which two people were killed.

The man and woman died after the car in which they were travelling hit a wall and went into a field near the Department of Education examinations branch on the Ballymahon road.

The woman has been named as Kathryn Devanney of Auburn Villas in Athlone.

It is believed the accident happened in the early hours of this morning.

Gardaí are asking anyone who was on the Ballymahon road out of Athlone in the early hours of this morning to contact Athlone Garda Station on 090-649 8550.

    Man dies after Tipperary collision

A 62-year-old man has died following injuries he received in a car crash at Urlingford in Co Tipperary yesterday afternoon.

He was the second person to die as a result of the two-car collision that occurred on the main Cork-Dublin Road. A woman in her 40s was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accidents pushed the number of road deaths this year past 100. Today also sees the introduction of 31 new penalty points for motoring offences.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has said there is a responsibility on all of us to drive safely and not to take risks.

Mr Ahern said the Government would push ahead with its road safety strategy but they also had to ask the public to be responsible.

A man and a woman died in a late night car crash in Co Westmeath, taking the weekend’s road death toll to four, gardaي said today.

It is understood the car crashed through a wall at the Department of Education building on the Ballymahon Road, Athlone, in the early hours of this morning.

Body found in crashed car in Co Louth
    03/04/2006 - 12:04:20

Gardaي in Co Louth are investigating a road accident that claimed the life of a person in Hackballscross this morning.

The victim's body was found in the smouldering remains of a car found in Rassan, on the Dundalk to Castleblaney road, at around 9.15am.

The car, which was obscured from view, is believed to have left the road several hours previously.

The remains were so extensively burned that the sole occupant may have to be identified by tracing the chassis number of the car.

This macabre find brings the weekend death toll on Irish roads to six, bringing the number killed on the roads so far this year to 102.

Weekend road carnage takes year's fatalities past 100
    03/04/2006 - 14:11:08

The number of people killed on the Republic’s roads this year topped 100 today.

The latest spate of accidents, which saw six road users die since the beginning of the weekend, brought the death toll in 2006 to 102.

On the day gardaي began enforcing 31 new penalty points offences, their colleagues were investigating four separate fatal crashes, which meant there were four more deaths so far this year than at the same point last year.

A motorist was killed at Rassan, on the main Dundalk to Castleblaney Road when his car went out of control, crashed off the roadway and burst into flames.

The incident was discovered at 9.30 this morning and the body of the single occupant of the car was removed to Louth County Hospital, Dundalk.

The identity of the deceased is not yet established, a garda spokesman said.

Meanwhile, a man and a woman in their late 20s or early 30s died in a car crash in Co Westmeath.

It is understood their vehicle crashed through a wall at the Department of Education building on the Ballymahon Road, Athlone, in the early hours of this morning.

Gardaي said the accident was discovered at 7.30am but it is thought it may have occurred several hours earlier.

A 62-year-old man also died from the injuries he received in a car crash at Urlingford in Co Tipperary yesterday afternoon.

The deceased was the driver of one of the cars and died yesterday evening at Kilkenny General Hospital.

He was the second person to die as a result of the two-car collision that occurred on the N8 Dublin to Cork road. A woman in her 40s was pronounced dead at the scene.

Elsewhere, Kevin Walsh, 16, from Bruff, Co Limerick, died when the car in which he was a back-seat passenger was struck from behind by a 4x4 vehicle at Toomevara, Co Tipperary, shortly after 5am on Saturday.

    From:The Irish Independent

    Eugene Hogan

A TEENAGER'S dying moments were relived last night by his heartbroken uncle after their car was hit by a former Irish rugby star.

The horrific crash happened when ex-international Eddie Halvey drove into the back of the parked car.

Last night, Declan Tierney, from Bruff, Co Limerick, recalled how his brother Vincent who had been driving the car, had stopped in the hard shoulder in the early hours of Saturday outside Toomevara, Co Tipperary, to try to clear the road of stray cattle.

A Toyota Landcruiser driven by Mr Halvey rammed into the back of their BMW car. The neck of Mr Tierney's 16-year-old nephew, Kevin Walsh, was broken on impact. Mr Tierney, who was sitting in the front seat, said: "I just remember my brother - Vincent - shouting 'Jesus!'"

Road deaths exceed 100 as new system comes into force
    From:ireland.com
    Monday, 3rd April, 2006

Road deaths for the year climbed above 100 today as 31 new penalty point offences came into force.

A total of 102 people have been killed on Irish roads - four more than the same period last year.

The new penalty point offences, coupled with the planned introduction of random breath testing, is the Government's response to the increasing carnage.

The authorities also plan to introduce a ban on the use of mobile phones while driving and roll out a network of privately operated speed cameras.

Dangerous overtaking, breaking red lights and crossing a continuous white line are among a list of new offences that will attract fixed fines and penalty points from today.

A Garda computer system is due to be linked to the Courts Services shortly to ensure that the system becomes fully effective.

But road deaths have remained stubbornly high this year, having reached a four-year high in 2005.

Labour's Jan O'Sullivan claimed today the safety of school children was not being taken seriously enough under the new penalty points offences.

Ms O'Sullivan said: "Failure to obey a school warden is an extremely dangerous practice, putting the lives of countless children at risk. And yet it only gets a driver a single penalty point if they are caught.

"Pulling up too close to the car in front of you will get you two penalty points, but ignoring a school warden as they try to get children safely to school will only get you one.

"Failure to stop for a Garda also gets two points. Why do school wardens and school children not get the same protection? It doesn't make any sense," she said.

The imposition of a penalty point for the use of the right hand lane of a motorway by a bus or a heavy goods vehicle has angered hauliers.

Jimmy Quinn of the Irish Road Haulage Association said it was accepted road practice to move over into the right hand lane when traffic was entering a motorway from a slip road.

Mr Quinn said this rule removes any discretion from the driver and was not in force anywhere else in the European Union.

Laws may come and laws may go but until people take responsibity for thier actions the death toll will mount without mercy.

There are so many ways to deal with this ever growing crisis but they are not being done by this government for one reason only, MONEY!!! I fully realise that everyone must take responsibility for their own driving and I believe that Gardai cannot be blamed as they can only work to their best with the resources they have. Actually Gardai will be the first to say that prevention is better than detection.

The Garda are running a program throughout the country where they, upon invitation by company/school, show a presentation coupled with an excellent narrative and a show of some of their tools of detection. A presentation was shown in my workplace last year and out of a total workforce of approx 3000 people only about 60 turned up for day one out of two. All of the images of accident scenes were horrific. Unfortunately the video image of one particular driver drunk as a skunk at the M50 toll bridge. The Gardai were following this guy to the bridge to determine if he was drunk and watched him as he missed the coin bucket, get out of his car and stagger around trying to collect his coins. When I watched it I was absolutely sickened to realise people were doing this and the Garda showed us the time on the in-car video camera. It showed 7.50pm on a weekday. What was even worse was that some people at the presentation actually laughed. They soon stopped however when the garda asked who had been affected by death of a relative/friend because of a drunk driver. Seven people raised their hands.

It really shows that some people are ignorant of how much pain and loss of loved ones on our roads. Everyone makes mistakes on the road, myself included but why do people put themselves and others at so much risk?????

After all that I have a question.

Has anyone been afraid to actually drive on our roads??

With the amount of bad/danagerous driving i saw, I was afraid bring my kids with me in the car.

I hate travelling by road. Give me a plane or a train any day.

I was out in Hungary last week. The driving out there is 100 times worse than here. It makes the driving here look sane. Its a wonder that there are any motorists still alive after driving the motorways around Budapest.
