I am looking for a good firewall, preferably free. I used McAfee before but the trial run is up and I am not really interested paying for another session. for virus protection I am currently using Avast! and am finding it really good, are there any firewalls done by the same company?

Since you mention McAfee my guess is that you are running windows.

Good firewall running on windows, it doesn't exist. I've a commercial windows firewall on my pc. It crashed last week after a blue screen. Until I reinstalled it, I enabled a second firewall I had on the PC, otherwise my PC would have had no firewall. - so a windows software firewall is one blue screen or application crash away from being no firewall. BTW: I've had the windows firewall turned off by software installs too possibly the firewall that crashed.

Good firewalls are external to windows.

Please post on the windows forum if you are looking for windows software or drivers.

If you are looking for an external non-windows box then perhaps the computers forum is the one to go to.

if you are asking about configuring the firewall the net/comms one may be good.

If you are asking about developments in firewalls, showing new products, copmpairing types of firewalls and their differneces / methodologies then here is a good place.

This is the security forum , ditching windows and IE and microsoft scripting in favor of a more secure OS/browser would be a way to be secure. Trying to plug all the holes in windows is never-ending..
