How to dispose of CD's

OK I was a hoarder, but my wife has corrected the malfunction in this male unit. I have disposed of a lot of things sensibly but am left with 100's of CD's and don't want to just throw them in the bin.

These CD's are from covers of PC mags that I thought I would use some day and have built up to 100's. They are of no use - dated and useless software.

Where can I take them to to dispose of correctly?

    Regards.

Don't know, but I'm interested too, since I have 100's of old data CD's and misburnt CD-R's to dispose of. I remember reading in a German computer mag that there are companies out there that do recycle them. They chop them up into little bits, and extract the various metals from the metallic film from them in a chemical bath of some sort, then recycle the plastic chips afterwards. I've no idea how you and I would access such a service though. Maybe companies have facilities for this via companies that do document shredding and the like?

I'd like to know too:) Was thinking plastics recycling may be able to do something with them?

You could try the FS forum on the off chance

Many people could do with a fully legit copy of paint shop pro !

I give any useful s/ware to the local school.

Believe me there is nothing in this pile of CD's that anyone would need or want.

I saw an add for Oxygen in a mag at work and sent an email to them - hope to get a reply soon.

In east point the recycle service take CDs. I just bring my cds into work and drop them in there. The company that do it are called OZO and are in Jamestown and Inshicore. If you want to do the reuse option offer the cases on the music forum and I am sure somebody will take them off you.

Yup I heard that a while ago and went crazy :) I can't wait, I'll have to see him. Think I'd probably prefer to see him in somewhere like Greece or France rather than Dublin though.

    Finally found a place! :)

    http://www.jackandjill.ie/recycling.htm

free to post to them and everything. I wonder do they need to be intact though as I know I've broken some personal CD's before disposing of them before so they can't be read.

Hey Cormie, you're (still) in Bray aren't you? If so, just take them to the Bray recycling centre off the Boghall Road!

Only in Bray occasionally now to visit home and it's usually past opening hours so this is a lot handier, just pop them in an envelope and freepost them off. I wonder what they do with them?

AFAIK they chop them up into tiny little pieces and put them into a chemical bath that extracts the various metals used in the layers between the plastic. These can be recycled I believe. The rest is polycarbonate and can be re-used although possibly not for CD's as it wouldn't be pure enough.

Ah cool :) So it's ok to send them broken in two then I guess :)

Edit: Just rang them and it's fine to send them in broken up :)

Your local second level school Art teacher is always looking for stuff like that.
I know one that I know has spent the year so far tormenting people for old crisp packets.
