"You Have 3 Unread Emails" Message

I read about this in some publication over the last four weeks and cannot find the article or know the publication.

Basically, in WinXP Pro, where you have a number of user accounts on the PC, you get the message "You Have 3 Unread Emails" against a users name on the user login selection screen. When you go into the email for that user, there are not 3 mails waiting. There is a download to rectify this issue but I cannot locate on the MS site.

I have this problem on our home PC but have searched high and low looking for the article but cannot find it.

Does anyone know what the patch is and from where to download it.

    Regards.

Have you got the latest updates installed? Open IE, go to tools menu select windows update and follow on from there...

If you want to disable the notification completely, or change the numebr of days before e-mail is 'abandoned' then download TweakUI
Option is on the "Logon" tree --- "Unread Mail"

Are you sure it's not just telling you about hotmail email? Whenever you log into hotmail from XP it logs those unread email messages too, or when you log into either Windows or MSN Messenger, does the same thing.

Well, I don't know about XP Pro but you can change it back to zero by editing the registry in XP Home by doing the following:

1: Click START, RUN, and type regedit.

2: In the registry editor, click HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, UnreadMail

3: Under that you'll see a list of the current usernames. Select the one you want to change

4: In the right hand window, double click the MeassageCount entry and change the Value Data from whatever it is back to 0 and click OK.

5: Check the Windows login screen then and it should now read as if there's no e-mails waiting to be checked.

As I said, that's the procedure for XP Home. Give it a go with Pro and see if it works as well. But, for God's sake, BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY beforehand just to be safe.

Thank you for all the replies.

My WinXP Pro is updated very regularily as are my office products. In fact I update all of my software very regularily.

Wherever I read the article, it had identified this message as a known issue in WinXP and there was a downloadable patch for it. I have pulled work and home apart looking for the article but it might help if I could remember the publication.

    Thank again folks

I had this same issue on XP pro x64 edition.

As Achilles said, it turned out to be my hotmail on the admin account.

I wish it was just an issue with a Hotmail account but I don't use hotmail.

I have been trawling through the web looking for a solution without any joy. And it's really bugging me now.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Make sure you don't have any unread emails in Outlook or Outlook Express.

There is an option in tweakui that gets rid of it.

Done, sorted, fixed, problem eliminated, issue resolved......

    Next issue please !!

    Thanks to all.
