"Stupid" Phoenix Wright

Dammit, why do I keep buying games that suck up all of my spare time. I went and bought Phoenix Wright yesterday, and I played it until about 2 in the morning. Up at the crack of dawn then this morning to get back into it.

And I have no idea why this game is so addicting. It's not that intuitive, it's a very basic premise, the sound and graphics could come from an old ZX Spectrum game. I guess it's that the playability absolutely rocks! It's been a long time where my first impression of a game has been "meh" followed some 10 minutes later by "woah!"

Having said that, I read somewhere that there are only 5 cases, and replay value is zero, so that makes for a short experience.

I spent a fair amount of time to finish this. You'll zip through the first case in no time at all but the subsequent chapters get more complex.

While it didn't take that long to complete I was very satisfied by the end, as I don't particulary like games that bog you down with loads of extras. Phoenix Wright was a fine balance, a nice smooth ride that was immensely enjoyable from start to finish.

Another game on my list; how does it actually work... I mean, is it like a detective game where you have to build up evidence to solve cases or something? Or is it more about the way you act in court, what comments you make etc.

There are two parts to each case. The first part is gathering evidence and interrogating witnesses and the next is in the court were you cross examine witnesses and use the evidence you collected to show contradictions. It plays very like a point and click adventure and is totally scripted but there is a sense of achievement in progressing through the game. If you have ever played Snatcher on the Mega CD, well it's very similar to it in playability. The translation is fantastic, with some very memorable characters and is genuinely funny throughout. It's one of my favourite games of last year and nothing beats shouting objection into the microphone :)

Oh no. Nothing beats finding naughty words which also work when shouted. Fun, in the most childish way possible.

But to the op, the first couple of cases are short, the last one is fairly long afaik. As is the fourth.

Think I might break it out again.

I'm really enjoying it in between Oblivion sessions. Even though the guy in Gamestop told me not to buy it because he'd heard it was crap from someone else in the store.

Nope, the cases get longer each time. The first one takes a half an hour, second one 2 hours, third one 4 hours, fourth one 6 hours and the last one takes about 10 hours (allegedly). You're talking 15-20 hours gameplay. Pretty damn good for a handheld game.....

Haven't gone back to it since finishing the second case, to be honest, but I should. Its a great game.

The cases do get longer each time alright. They go on for too long sometimes. Its an ok game. I didn't think much of the humour, it was a bit childish to be honest. Broken Sword was much better in that department.

Have this about a week now and can't get enough of it.
Sure, some of the humour is questionable (Mrs Lott verging on being racist) but all in all there are some genuinely laugh out loud moments.

The thing I find best about it though is the interest you can't help but have in trying to get these defendants off and it's very satisfying when you find something early on in a case that looks to have no relavance at the time and then <snap!>, something twigs in a testamony that makes you go "ahh hang on there you lying toe-rag!"......."TAKE THAT!"

It's kinda like an interactive book in some ways but it holds your attention so well that I have to recommend it - it's a breadth of fresh air for any gamer that's bored or just used to the same old, same old.

I can't wait to get Trauma Center now as a result as it's meant to be of the same kin.

My copy finally came from www.play.com today and I haven't been disappointed. It's exactly the sort of game that is ideal for the DS, simple yet addictive, with it's anime visuals and cheesey soundtrack, I quickly found myself immersed in this game.

I've only played up until the end of the second case but what I've seen so far has left me with a good impression as, to be honest, even when originally ordering this game, I thought to myself that some of the reviews I had come across (on here and in Magazines) must have been overly generous for what, essentially, is an old-school point an click adventure. How wrong I was, it's simple but effective.

    8/10

    Deadly.

I love when they make sequels to games I like. :)

The US version of the sequel Justice for All got pushed back to next year, however, it will still be released in Japan this October. With English text. :)

I'll import it... it's being released as a budget title straight away in Japan (probably because it's considered a reissue; like the first game it's another upgraded GBA title) and can be ordered on Play Asia* for a mere €25 including shipping. Good stuff.

The last case is not holding my interest at all, what with it being outside the story arc.

I believe so. Some of the text may have been westernised but all the cases were the same.

It took me a while to get into the last case. I came back to it a few times before I got hooked again. It's not totally outside the story arc. Edgeworth's history becomes more involved as the case progresses.
