French or American Oak Floor

I am about to put in some semi-solid wooden flooring in my living and hall area but unsure whether go for american oak or french oak. I need to look in more detail but so far have noticed that the American oak is a shorter strip of wood and isn't as rich in colour as the French. Has anyone any ideas they wish to share?

Both types should deepen in colour when exposed to the sun. I had an oke floor that was pale when it went down a year ago but now it is a nice honey colour. Any particular manufacturers ???
