Adding extra repositories in Ubuntu Dapper

    Hi guys,

Newbie here when it comes to linux, and just trying to figure out something. Basically, I've just installed Ubuntu Dapper flight 5 and was trying to set up things like flash support, dvd playback, codecs etc etc. Following the instructions on ubuntuguide.com (thanks for that link munch!), I uncommented the relevent lines in etc/apt/sources.list, so now it looks like this:
    #
    # deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 6.04 _Dapper Drake_ - Alpha i386 (20060310)]/ dapper main restricted

    deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 6.04 _Dapper Drake_ - Alpha i386 (20060310)]/ dapper main restricted

    deb http://jp.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted
    deb-src http://jp.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted

    ## Major bug fix updates produced after the final release of the
    ## distribution.
    deb http://jp.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted
    deb-src http://jp.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted

    ## Uncomment the following two lines to add software from the 'universe'
    ## repository.
    ## N.B. software from this repository is ENTIRELY UNSUPPORTED by the Ubuntu
    ## team, and may not be under a free licence. Please satisfy yourself as to
    ## your rights to use the software. Also, please note that software in
    ## universe WILL NOT receive any review or updates from the Ubuntu security
    ## team.
    deb http://jp.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe
    deb-src http://jp.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe

    ## Uncomment the following two lines to add software from the 'backports'
    ## repository.
    ## N.B. software from this repository may not have been tested as
    ## extensively as that contained in the main release, although it includes
    ## newer versions of some applications which may provide useful features.
    ## Also, please note that software in backports WILL NOT receive any review
    ## or updates from the Ubuntu security team.
deb http://jp.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-backports main restricted universe multiverse
    deb-src http://jp.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-backports main restricted universe multiverse

    deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main restricted
    deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main restricted
    deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security universe
    deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security universe

However, when I try to download the relevent files for flash/dvd playback etc, it says that the files are not found. Is it a case of the dapper versions not being released yet? If so, is it ok to use the 'hoary' repositories?

    Thanks in advance,
    nakey

Have you run apt-get update to download the catalogues from the new repositories?

Using the Hoary repositories could break a lot of things... badly...

Some of what you might be looking for may not be in the backports repository. Take a search for 'plf'.

Breezy repositories would probably be better, since that's a more recent release. You shouldn't need to go editing config files to add repos anyway, Synaptic allows you to do it via the GUI (again, basing this on Breezy, i assume it hasn't changed for dapper).

As a fairly inexperienced linux user myself I wouldn't have gone with installing Dapper since its not final for another few months.

OK, cheers guys. I editted the config guide based on ubuntuguide, which seems to be targetted at hoary users. I'll try adding a breezy repo and see what happens, I'll let you know!

Also, is synaptic/apt get the only way to get these packages? If I was to manually download these packages from the web, could they be installed?

Yes, you can manually install a downloaded package using dpkg -i.
apt-get is preferred because it will sort out dependencies, and download
    anything else you may need.

    Cool, cheers.

I actually got the problem sorted with a bit of googling. I found an updated sources.list for dapper, and that was able to find pretty much everything. I installed the various codecs etc I wanted to, but I'm in a bit of a stickler enabling dvd playback. According to wiki.ubuntu.org, with dapper dvd playback has to be through the xine backend. I'm not too sure what this means.

On the subject, what would you guys recommend as decent music/movie players/organisers?

VLC as a movie player, xmms as a winamp clone.

Dvd playback may require xine (apt-get xine) its a media player. Basically there are a number of media players, you may come across problems with codecs.

All problems are discussed on http://www.ubuntuforums.org/
