Irish Times article re Cisco

In yesterdays Irish Times Cisco said they were amazed by the lack of interest by the main Universities(UCD,DCU,Trinity) when they approached them with offers of internships with the company.
Appartently two of the universities did not respond and the third simply said they would post the offers on their website.

Also, the CVs they did receive were sub-standard and disappointing.

    That says it all really...

"Internships with top-level American companies - which typically lead to employment offers upon graduation - are extremely rare in Ireland, say industry and academic sources. Ireland was the only country outside the US to be given the Cisco internships for undergraduate engineering students, Galvin says."

"Industry insiders have expressed bafflement that so many universities apparently did not see any reason to actively promote the internships or use the direct contact from Cisco as a way of opening doors for collaboration or investment."

This is ridiculous. This was a fantastic opportunity, probably the best internship opportunities available in the country, a gateway into silicon valley and the universities were too stupid to recognise it for what it was. Fair play to CIT and the University of Ulster at Coleraine - the article suggests they have profited nicely from this.

I don't know about Trinity but UCD doesn't have any formal interships at all for the undergrad engineering courses (with the exception of the 3rd year civils who finish up in March that year). It can be quite difficult to find one of the big companies that will take you on for 3 summer months only, Intel's intership is 6 months minimum, and it's the same for most other big companies.

What kind of internships were Cisco offereing? 6 months? For all engineers or just electronic?

when i was in ucd, analog devices offered 2 summer internships every year and they were really pushed as great chances, the cisco ones were similar 3 month ones. about 50% of my electronic class got 'internships' of one kind of another for the summer of 3rd year, although most of them were just junior engineer summer jobs..
