Intel DDR2

    I heard today that AMD dont support ddr2 ram. But I was also told that Intel have supported it for years.
    I also saw this. The date is March 14, and states "Now intel has started using DDR2 memories..." The date would suggest that it was only a recent introduction. I dont really care how long they hav supported it, it makes no difference to me, but I would just like to know.

    Intel have supported DDR2 since the i955X chipset (whenever that was); AMD will be releasing socket AM2 processors this June, which will give dual-channel DDR2 support to their stuff. It allegedly doesn't make much of an improvement anyway compared to decent DDR RAM.

    The main difference worth noting here is what is meant by supporting DDR2 on the two platforms. The AMD64/opteron processor line use an inbuilt memory controller in the CPU offering advantages in terms of latency and bandwidth but it does mean that the CPU being produced must change to get a new DDR2 memory controller. The Intel chips that people are using with DDR2 have an external memory controller in the northbridge meaning that a DDR2 memory controller is mainly just an upgraded chipset.

    I couldn't actually say - I went from using 2ghz w/256mb of DDR to 3.4 w/1gig of DDR2 so I had no sort of in between base for comparison - until I finally got a new pc entirely I had to be happy with running my games on low settings :D

    The Athlon 64's integrated memory Controller has supported DDR2 since the Venice core, it just wont be implemented until AM2,

    Thats why all the motherboard manafacturers have the Am2 boards made already:

    When the first Am2 is released it will be nothing more than A S939 CPU with an extra pin, a different HSF mounting bracket.

    Oh, and back on topic:o DDR2 sends 4 bits of data per clock where as DDR sends 2, DDR2 can also reach higher clock speeds, DDR2 still has bad latencies compared to DDR, DDR at 200mhz is better than DDR2 at 200mhz
