Damn... Was hoping that this was a "complain about mymail" thread...

    Get your mail forwarded instead of using that mess of a system - I have all my tcd mail sent to my gmail account where I can actually sort and search it easily! {'s faster, too}

a couple of times over the past few months i've noticed connection issues to mymail only from within college - tis weird.

Ever notice how the formatting is lost when you send an e-mail from mymail.ie?

I mean that the line breaks are all over the place and look really unprofessional :(.

and it doesnt do font or size formatting, or bold or italic, and you cant change the background colour making it impossible for class reps or anyone to send mail that is compliant with the disability policy....

    Sounds like a good thing
making it impossible for class reps or anyone to send mail that is compliant with the disability policy....

Eh, why do you need to mess with colour to ensure compatability with disability policy? Surely plain text is best for a screen reader?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

A cream background with black text has found to be the most compatible generally. useable with screen readers, as well as those who are not blind, but do however have sight difficulties.

(also, having set up a ton of it, i'm really annoyed at how disgracefully designed most disability software is)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

But can anything be done about the erratic line breaks?

As you might have heard today MyMail will be replaced by something hopefully better by the start of the next academic term. To calm some people's fears, all your email WILL be safe and sound.
I've actually used three email clients for TCD email since I came here. First was Eudora mail (a regular software client on a PC), then came the much loved webmail and then the monster that is MyMail.
To show my age do you guys remember when you had to apply to have internet access in college???

The porblems have been caused by authentication servers going down and the five other backup machines not kicking in to take over. The other issue acording to ISS was that a cable came loose between two servers that shouldn't have made a difference whatsoever but it did.

Laddie, some of us had those forms to fill in and were sending email over X.25... Remember the wonders(???) of VT terminals and trying to remember to prefix external email addresses with PSI%235000000001::

On the contrary, I like MyMail because it's so plain. And it works perfectly with Apple Mail (unlike Gmail, for outgoing mail).

Plain!!! It's finicky and annoying. I used webmail till the last when I was forced to move to mymail, still annoyed by it...

Ah sure I knew that but chose to ignore it. They don't count like

   ... What?

Em... Well Ian NFE's become non-negligible for a some thermally excited lattices and the fermi vector reaches the brillouin zone boundary causing the fermi surface to perturb and discontinue. Thats the basis of conduction in semiconductors and why computers work so there :p

Can only staff set up MyMail to work with Outlook?

I've tried to set it up on outlook, but I can only receive mail this way - not send.

On the ISS page it has a table which suggests that students are obliged to use the web ap and not Outlook, whereas staff are obliged to use Outlook.

Anyone successfully been able to properly set it up for Outlook?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

    Lol.... same here...

I had to look at the staff pages to find the settings for Outlook - I can only receive but not send.

Mymail is terrible (just like all online e-mail services) when one needs to add attachments, I'd much prefer to use Outlook.

One thing though - it seems Outlook sending works in college i.e. when you connected to the college network. At home though, it's mymail only. :(

Aye, I download all my emails to my pc using outlook, and log into mymail whenever I need to send a reply. Pretty annoying.

I can get Outlook Express/Thunderbird to work for POP here in halls, but not outside the network.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

pop3s/imaps will both work form inside and outside college for both students and staff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

The problem is it doesn't seem to with mymail.

Are students actually discouraged from synchronising mymail with Outlook? As <Johnny> pointed out, there aren't any instructions on the ISS pages telling students how to sync them.

I've got all the relevant proxies loaded into the programmes e.g. I can view the Irish Times at home but I can't seem to send e-mails via Outlook.

Will ISS help me with this? (Asking as it seems like they don't want students using Outlook in the first place ;) )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

stop referring to outlook directly its annoying....

POP3S/IMAPS clients are supported for all users, the address is just pop.tcd.ie, google how to configure an POP3S/IMAPS server for whatever client you use then. ISS might help...but i doubt it...

And you don't need to use any proxy to access the imaps/pop3s server...

As regards sending mail, that is done via SMTP, while within college campus(must have 134.226.*.* ip) you can use smtp.tcd.ie to send your mails. Though this won't work for staff or students from outside college, you need to use your ISP's smtp server then.(the only way tcd's smtp server would allow you to send mails via it is if its got SMTP auth enabled, but i don't think it does...)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

So you are just saying that we can't send mail at home right?

(Unless we get authentication for the SMTP?)

They're working on it, the last time I checked anyway.

    Nope...
you need to use your ISP's smtp server then.

    Wow that's incredible, thanks Nietzschean.

I just changed the smtp field to "mail1.eircom.net" and it works now.

i use Thunderbird for all my mailing. Incoming server is mail.tcd.ie and outgoing is my own smtp server. works brilliant. i can format messages and keep them for offline viewing. i only use mymail if i am off campus and without my laptop i.e on placement.
