The national broadcaster also said that it intends to deliver simultaneous live coverage of the Champions League on both television and its website next year.

(I think this is the most appropriate forum for this info).

isnt that part of the contract from next year and onwards anyway

Sky and ITV have to do the same aswell

but its good to see RTÉ actually doing this

nice idea but why are they not showing the bernard dunne fight live on rte 2. The licence fee is not for streaming of programmes. I hope it dosent set a precedent with live only streaming then deferred highlights on rte two. I suppose they cant really use interactive like bbc because they havent developed it yet or even digital text as they said they would do by around 2005 or so.

this cannot be allowed to happen continually. once off to test the service then yes, i would have no problem with that

Hrm, any chance this is the start of an attempt to justify state funding for an "RTÉ Sport" on DTT?

"Look! Look! We have so much sport and so little time!"

oh, and aertel claims its going to be on RTÉ.ie....

They don't own rté.ie (xn--rt-cja.ie in IDN). Nobody does, as IEDR don't issue IDN's yet ;)

I doubt it very much; even with the upcoming Premiership packages Ireland cannot justify two sports channels, certainly not on a commercial level, although technically RTE don't think on that level and so could pack it full of local amatuer sports :D

Isn't that three? we already have Chorus Sports :D

Theres going to be non-licence money coming from the DCMNR for new services on DAB, and it appears that it could be RTÉ Sports, RTÉ News, RTÉ Kids that get the go-ahead as new RTÉ services, to eventually be funded by the money from selling extra space on the muxes to private broadcasters... we'll see, anyway. There will be DTT of some fashion "fairly soon" even if it just stays at the four current channels replicated digitally.

DTT "political tests" This summer on three muxes. But National DTT fairly soon? No.

Tonight, RTE showed their first live sporting webcast. It was, as you may have guessed from the above, a boxing match, Bernard Dunne v Sergio Carlos Santillan.

I picked the 450k broadband video / audio feed and ran it from my Xbox using Xbox Media Center.

I have to say that I was watching this on a 32" widescreen TV from about 8 or 9 feet away and the fight looked a bit pixelated when it zoomed out, but for a lot of the close up action, it was very clear. Better than VCD, not quite a good divx. The audio was quite good also.

So, they have done it once now, and for those of us with media centers (PC, Xbox or others), the future looks interesting for this kind of streaming from RTE. What will be next?

Anyone else watch it? Dunne won by the way.

Couldn't get either the Windows Media nor Realmedia versions to work at all, computer passed all the nessisary streaming tests too

The Windows Media versions was very jumpy on my PC, but my Xbox (not a 360 by the way) played it perfectly.

bah, forgot to check the webcast, watched it later on RTÉ 2 though. not much of a contest

Pretty much a one sided affair. The cut above his eye could have got nasty if Santillan could have got to it...

A win is a win is a win as they say....

I have Irish Broadband Breeze 2mb and I found the boxing match to be unwatchable. The action kept pausing and buffering every 20/30 seconds.

I have a 3mb connection thru esatbt and I noticed that on my PC (w2k, 512mb and WM 9) the video was crap. I then ran it thru my xbox (pm me if you want to know how) and watched it full screen on a 32" tv, it looked great. I may need to take a look at the PC and get rid of a few useless codecs....

Problems with it on IBB could be caused due to packet loss (which will affect quality), or latency (which will cause buffering).

Also, try switching the transport mechanism.
    In Windows media player :
    Tools => Options => Network
    Try TCP and/or HTTP
    In RealPlayer :
Tools => Preferences => Connection => Network Transports
tick 'Manually configure connections settings', and the press the 'RTSP Settings' button.
    Try using UDP, TCP, HTTP

Note, depending on your connection, quality will vary between them, so be sure to try all three, also when testing, ensure to have only one ticked (so it forces it to play through method you choose).

btw, quality-wise, Windows stream will tend to be better picture.
