Crossbows, legal or not?

    Are crossbows illegal in Ireland?

    My dad used to have one in the 80s but it's not been seen for years (probably in the attic).

    Anyway, back to my original question, are they legal, and if so where in Cork supplies them?

    Also, if legal, do they require a licence?

    Thanks.

    you need a license if they exceed 49lbs. So technically you could buy one up to 49lbs without having to get a license. though it doesn't mean that you could shoot it anywhere, obviously there'd be a safety thing with them no matter what poundage. i think there was a thread about this before. if you go into search on the top of the page type in crossbow and you'll probably find it;)

    Interesting - do you have a source for that?

    According to the actual law you need a licence for all crossbows, they make no differentiation in terms of their poundage:

    Defining them as a prohibited firearm:
    4.—(1) In the Firearms Acts, 1925 to 1990, "firearm" means—

    ( a ) a lethal firearm or other lethal weapon of any description from which any shot, bullet or other missile can be discharged;
    ( b ) an air gun (which expression includes an air rifle and an air pistol) or any other weapon incorporating a barrel from which metal or other slugs can be discharged;
    ( c ) a crossbow;
    ...

    from: http://193.178.1.79/ZZA12Y1990S4.html

    Prohibited firearms require a licence/firearm certificate:
    (2) Save in any of the cases hereinafter excepted from this section, every person who after the commencement of this Act has in his possession, uses, or carries any firearm without holding a firearm certificate therefor or otherwise than as authorised by such certificate, or purchases, uses, has in his possession, or carries any ammunition without holding a firearm certificate therefor or in quantities in excess of those authorised by such certificate, or fails to comply with any condition subject to which a firearm certificate was granted to him, shall be guilty of an offence under this Act and shall be punishable accordingly.
