I received my payslip today and it was 5 hours short of its usual 25 hours full working week.

So i rang the accountant to find out what the reason was,It was because on the 16th of march i was sick and couldn't come in that i wasn't paid for the public holiday of St.Patricks day.

Is my place of work allowed to do this?

My contract says this in relation to public holidays

Your entitlement to leave for public holidays shall be in accordance with the terms of part III of the Organisation of Working Time Act,1997

You will normally be entitled to a paid day off on all public holidays unless you are required to work by the company. In the event that you are required to work a public holiday, paid time off in lieu will be given

Has anybody ever heard of this being done before?

Were you genuinely ill on the 16th?

Some places have clauses relating to sick pay before or after a public holiday weekend

Did you get paid for the 16th even though you weren't in?

Im never good at understanding these things.

But the accountant also said that if the public holiday had of been a wednesday for example and i was sick on the Tuesday and came back on the Thursday,i would have gotten paid but because it was a friday and i wasn't in until monday im not entitled to pay

I'm not sure they can do that. In the Civil Service for example, if you are out sick Friday and Monday the count is four sick days! It is assumed you were sick Sat/Sun although they are not working days (ever in the CS!). However, from an employers point of view I can see the whole four day weekend thing that's happened here.

The private sector is the same. If you are off a friday and a monday they are entitled to ask for a sick line. I presume the OPs issue is relating to this.

I know in my old place that you would not get paid if you were sick the day immediately before or after a public holiday. I presume it was to deter people from calling after a major session! ;)

It's an unfortunate situation, but I think it could be generally accepted that too many people pull the pi$$ around days like these, and you could be a genuine person who gets shafted. I'd check with your account and HR department again.
