Channel 6: Views and Opinions

I am putting up a new thread for Channel 6 as I feel that the current Channel 6 threads are too long and both where dealing with what people where thinking about before it began broadcasting. I think that a new and shorter thread is suitable at this point. If the moderators wish they can stick this on to the end of the other Channel 6 threads.

Links to both of those threads: -

    On first apprisal: -

    1. House was very good (directed by Bryan Singer and Hugh Laurie was excellent).
    2. It is daft to spend 4million on Advertising, surely it would be better spend on some original Irish programming.
    3. Irish programming has to consist of much more then just 3 hours of Music Videos from 2 to 5pm and from 12 to 3 am. And an entertainment show and a movie show.

    Other peoples thoughts.

It sounds good, kinda like an irish Sky One in someways.
Shame though that they are not on SKY or Chorus MMDS in my area!
Its funny that in my area Chorus have trouble TV on channels 5/6/12 (there are only 12 channels in total) and yet no channel 6...

It's not an RTÉ channel. It's not a terrestrial channel. It is on cable only. Possibly on satellite soon. Probably never on terrestrial.

Until we have a digital terrestrial system here. I'm sure mouths are watering in Channel 6 at the prospect of being handed some spectrum on a digital system that they can rent to other channels.

It has potential, like any new channel. If they launch on Sky, Provide more Irish programming and Get the latest seasons of some of the good US shows for their theme nights (e.g. Family Guy (seasons 4 and 5 which to my knowledge have not been shown in Ireland yet unless they are on FX which leaves us non-Sky people in the cold) Stargate SG1/Atlantis (which would be nice if they could beat Sky 1 to it) Desperite Housewives (good for Ladies night) and a few others.

Personaly, you are not missing anything at the moment, and I am wondering if the channel will survive.

ROFL :) Well they might need a bigger budget for those improvements!

I was kinda wondering about that one, too - ie. whether Channel 6 might try to get to be one of the channels on the DTT trial. It would boost their audience (as in, to those that aren't on NTL/Chorus on the east cost) and would probably cost them very little, also.

cant imagine Channel 6 being on the DTT trial would boost their audience numbers. how many people have a DTT box already to receive the signal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

The DTT tirals are deliberately on a TX serving the most cabled area in Ireland. i.e. Three Rock. C6 on DTT would give almost zero extra coverage.

Though oddly DTT receivers / PC cards are on sale in PC World and Maplin in Limerick. Last year Homebase had a great variety of DAB radios here. I wonder who buys the stuff?

Ha Ha I think we know some them and they aren't a million miles away ... I came close to buying a DAB radio myself when the tests started (the raging controversy about bit rates and suchlike put me off).

But what I mean about Channel 6 and DTT is that they may be hoping to get enough space for two or three channels and therefore be in a position to lease out some space to the likes of E4 Ireland, Sky News Ireland etc. as they aren't likely to be handed any spectrum by the government.

Of course this is all assuming that the Irish government ends up going along similar lines to the British government.

Was just listening to the Channel6 head guy on Newstalk, he said they are competing against Sky One and Paramount just going for the teenage to 35 market, just providing an Irish station showing them, which I think is good.......they are showing House (which to my knowledge isn't on Sky or any other Satellite channel here - so that's a good thing)........I think they'll do ok, you have to remember what other channels have been like initially, give them a few months and i think they'll get decent viewing figures - I know I'll always try and watch a program on an Irish channel if it's on two channels........best of luck to them....

He also said the reason they aren't on Sky is that Sky's system (or the UK regulators) is that the last channel in gets the last available channel number in the particular range, and they are trying to get a channel slot beside the other Irish channels, I'd say it makes sense for them to get on Sky as soon as they can.......

They easily could have arranged to get slot 206 on Sky. 206 = Channel 6 It's simple! They obivously aren't very proud of their line up if they want a top EPG slot (one which IMO they don't deserve, not least cos they're on 12 hours a day, 4 of which are music videos).

I think it was a mistake not to launch on Sky. I hear they spent 3 Million Euro on advertising. If they got slot 206 on Sky they could have put this on all their ads and made people aware of this very easy to remember number.

If they launch on Sky in the future thay'll have to spend more money making people aware of the launch and number and by that time slot 206 may well be gone!

Only 12 hours what a complaint and I have noticed many boarders commenting on this.

Its a new channel. Its a digital channel. TV3 was on a year before it started going out before 12:00am, TG4 only started going out before 12 last year. BBC Three, Four, E4, More4, TNF etc all only go out for about 12 hours a day.

As for the 3million they are spending in advertising I would agree with you but rather then spend it on an EPG position they should try to make some TV.

The current Irish shows are cheep and takky and need more investment. 4million on avertising you could give 100 people a good wage on with 4million euro. What a waste.

And Living TV goes to Analogue.

Similar programming to Channel Six and to some extend better programming.

It cann't be good for Channel Six since now they are competing with Sky One, E4 and Living TV for the same audience. An audience that isn't very loyal.

Perhaps now they should think of buy Conan and Leno as they exit to NTL: Digital

  • I have these dodgy black borders down the left and right of programmes such as Buffy, Charmed, House, Dawson's Creek, Northern Exposure for example....anyone else have this problem? They're very very annoying...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 385 ✭✭radioman

Channel 6 aspect ratios are all over the shop. With the music programmes, the links in between are in widescreen then the videos are in 4:3 etc.. and those black borders down the side of the screen on some shows are absolutely ridiculous. They really need to sort these out, people will just switch off.

The music programmes I find are decent enough content wise but the links in between are obviously pre-recorded and the presenters are robot like. They need to loosen up a bit and not appear scripted and bland. Also would like to see more Irish bands featured.

Obviously there are gonna be teething problems but they need to sort them out quickly or they won't have any viewers.
