    A couple of things...
When you say you want to mute sound from the internet, do you mean music that may play when you visit a webpage?
And do you still want to hear whatever music you yourself are playing?
As far as I am aware it is all or nothing.
    Mute all or hear everything.

The modem mute that you used to be able to mute was the dialup sounds and data chatter- it wouldnt necessarily mute the sounds that you would have been played on certain sites.

You should not be hearing these sounds from a DSL device unless there are major issues.

    firefox+adblock + *.bebframe.* FTW

or in internet explorer:tools->internet options->programs->manage add-ons->disable shockwave flash object

of course the ie one disables flash totally so you'll have to re-enable it any time you want to look at one

In IE you can also go to Tools->Internet Options->Advanced and untick play sounds in web pages, altough that won't stop all sounds, just the crappy background music some pages have.
