Here's a thread for the TKD people on this forum, so feck off all you MMAers and don't be annoying us!:D

I'm fairly out of touch with the TKD scene at this stage so I'm wondering who do ye think are the top Irish TKD competitors around at the moment? What groups are doing well in internationals? I presume the IUTF are doing as well as ever, but what about the other groups?

Jon, if you are reading this, are Mark Philpott and Sean Keane and co competing regularly all the time? Did the IUTF compete on that 'FC TKD' show in england, I had a quick look at the video but didn't recognise anyone.

Well I was talking about real TKD and not that pouncy bounce around with your hands down go to the olympics type stuff but anyway. ;)

Anyone going to suggest a few names? I'd put a list up myself but it would be so out of data I'd probably still be on it! :)

I did alot of WTF TKD back years ago.

    Slightly off topic...

What do you guys prefer ITF or WTF fighting??

Which is more popular in ireland?

I found WTF olympic stuff fun, its pretty much full contact!

Well I presume most ITF stylists will prefer ITF and vica versa. I don't have much experience of WTF TBH (even though I have a green belt in it from when I was a kid), but the small bits of it I've seen looked a little boring. I'm sure if I trained in it a bit more I'd get into it.

I always really enjoyed ITF style but haven't done any of it in a good while, even though I've been threatening to do a TKD comp again for a long time.

To answer your question, ITF is much more populer in Ireland, more associations than you could shake a stick at.

I did WTF in canada. for a few years. WTF is popular there.

it was a pure sport really, and even though we did forms, and trad TKD training like Tiger Claw strikes to face etc. the total foucs was on WTF Olympic figthing.

I think I was a blue belt or a red belt...I cannot remember.

the training was tough. and the sparring was full contact.

funny thing is, people slag TKD, but where I trained was real tough, and had a serious high injury level, broken ribs, broken bones, KO,s from kicks in the head etc. it was rough rough training. and in kickboxing which I did for years, Thai over here in thailand, nor RBSD I never seen an injury level from sparring that came close to that WTF TKD club I was in.

Not that I condone injuries etc. its just an interesting observation.

Personally because it was so sport orienated for Olympic style , no one could throw a punch to save their lives, (except me as I was a kickboxer before this..and after when I came home).

Though I though it was quite exciting, and the sparring was a great adreline buzz!!!

I see it quite a bit on TV over there in Thailand, it must be popular here.

what I dislike was how sport orientated it was, the teacher had little interest in developing a fully rounded TKD student, nor teaching SD etc etc...

I won quite a few medals in east canada too back then when I was competing etc!!!!
This RBSD nut can be a dark horse sometimes LOL!!!!

I don't know if Brian Kerr of Holy Trinity Taekwondo Club (Belfast) still competes but I always heard that he was exceptionally good. The kids that he coaches have also been doing very well in international competition in recent years too.

I'm not really doing TKD long enough to be in the know I guess, but we have a few kids in our own group who have won a number of junior national events. One lad in particular could make an impressive sparrer when he becomes an adult. At the moment he's only about 10 years old.

That said from an adult point of few I don't think there are enough adult tournaments in TKD anymore... It seems to have more of a younger following these days (in ITF anyway).... That said Mr Corkery (2nd Dan - Kinsale TKD) metioned here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054906254 is probably the most impressive fighter I have ever seen compete. He has some amazing skills, and genuinely knows he's stuff. Plus he's pretty dang flexible.

My own instructor on the other hand is meant to have been a nifty fighter in his time (Mr O'Brien 4th Dan - Redking TKD), though I haven't ever witnessed him compete... That said I wouldn't like to get on the wrong side of him.
