ICMP connection only

    Hi,

I recently installed Vodafone Connect Card on my winxp laptop. I have uninstalled it because it was having problems creating a profile. Now, however, when I connect to the internet through my office network, I am only allowed to send and receive ICMP traffic. Any ideas?

If traffic is being blocked then it has to be getting blocked at some point. The trick is to find out what point.

Are you using static IP settings or are they supplied by DHCP?

Has your DNS and/or Default Gateway address been changed by the install?

Can you do a DNS lookup? Verify this by pinging google.ie. If it works then your DNS is working.

What traffic have you observed being blocked? Just http? Or is there other traffic : POP, SMTP, Telnet, SSH?

Are there some firewall rules on your network that are blocking your traffic.

Has a proxy setting on your browser been changed?

These are all just shots in the dark. You'll need to supply some more information about what you've tried, what works, what doesn't, etc.

    Regards,

    Liam

    Static IP

No, still the standard Eircom (159.134.237.6, 159.134.248.17)

I can only ping IP Addresses not domain names.

    All traffic is being blocked.

    No firewall is setup

    No proxies setup

I have even tried resetting TCP/IP using "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt". I dont particularly want to re-install my network card, but I think it's going that way. Any other ideas?

I don't have any other suggestion other than to see what's actually happening on the network.

Install Ethereal and observe what happens when you try to browse to google.ie.

You should first of all see ARP traffic looking up the MAC address of the DNS server
You should then see a DNS lookup to get the IP Address of google.ie
Then, if the gateway is different from the DNS server, you'll see more ARP traffic getting the MAC address of the gateway.
You should then see the TCP handshake with google.ie
Finally, you'll see the http traffic.

If you're not on a switched network, you may need to filter the traffic to display just the traffic to and from your PC.

If things don't go as above then hopefully you'll spot the problem fairly quickly.

    Regards,

    Liam

Ok, I have run some more tests and re-installed my network card. It seems when I run a telnet to a machine on the same network I'm getting a WSAStartup Error. I have tried using WinsockxpFix.exe, but no joy.

Could it be possible that the winsock dlls were replaced when I installed this program?
