Full Time Employee & small business / VAT?

    Hi there,

I have a question that I can't seem to get answered properly.
I am a full time employee in company abc and have my normal wages. Do I have to register for VAT / as business if I am earning additional money through freelance work as translator and writer?

I checked revenue.ie but this just tells me on one side that I have to register for VAT before I start whatever kind of business (which is fair enough)
On the other side they state that I have to register for VAT ID if
"my annual turnover (i.e. the amount of your receipts excluding VAT) exceeds or is likely to exceed the following annual limits

    * €51,000 in respect of the supply of goods
    * €25,500 in respect of the supply of services"

Now, my employee wages do exceed 25,500 but do they count into that?

I'm completly lost with that  , so anyone who has experience with it and can give some advise and clarification, please let me know. I'd really appreciate it

    Cheers.

What a coincidence, I studied your companies accounts (company ABC) in accounting last year :D ..... If I remember correctly the question on them was a Bit** as well.......

Ah no in all seriousness provided your an employee of the company (and it is a company and not a partnership of which you are one of the partners/???) then there wouldnt seem to be any reason to count your wages. The VAT will have already been paid/Calculated on that work since it went through the company accounts.

However since you will have to register for VAT either way (and your question is simply about whether you need a VAT ID as well) why dont you just register for VAT and presuumably after the year end if they feel you also need a VAT ID they will tell you. They must be set up to give you one then as they would have to give one to people who exceeded the threshold without expecting to.

    ... that's what I think too ...

Thanks a mill for this reply ... I call them up now either way just to get things right ... but hey it's mad: rather then concentrating on the work-beside-work bit I'm reading VAT guides for hours ... currently about "What VAT applies if you invoice a company outside Ireland"
I'll see how it goes but any experiences / advise are still welcome ...
