    http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/29_C-180_Specifications.htm

Seen this for 100euro in Boots today. OK, it only packs 14mb built in memory - obviously ill be adding more memory.

But going by todays standard, is it a decent camera? I dont need anything special, but good quality photos are a must and I would like to have a good zoom feature... I presume 4x digital is nothing special?

It's not the camera that takes good pictures it's you. My first camera was a Canon Powershot 1mp hand me down and it took lovely pics...

OK enough is enough with all this " its not the camera , its you that takes good pictures " lines !! Im sick of hearing it.
The only thing you are in control of with a digital is composition , for everything else the electronics of the camera plays a huge part.

There are some truly dreadful cameras out there that make it very hard for even the best photographer to get a decent picture , and being a previous owner of an Olympus C180 I can tell you that this is a truly dreadful camera ,

It has barrel distortion , colour bleed , absolutely dreadful colour correction ( anything blue comes out purple !! ) and no matter what you do to the settings the results are equally dreadful.

I dumped this dreadful piece of kit and my next camera was a Sony DSCP100. Much much better. Canons are generally very good as well. Olympus are very hit and miss. So are sony for that matter but the DSC100 is good.

Remember , that line ( its you not the camera ! ) only applies to film as far as im concerned. Some digital cameras out there , especially the low end , are truly awful pieces of kit, with digital you are relying on the quality of the sensor and the supporting circuitry for the quality of your colours , focussing etc. and this is very very important.

andy - Thanks very much for your post, great advise.

I'm going to take your advise and not touch that camera - I knew 100euro was too good to be true for a camera! I'm going to keep my pennies, save up about 250-300 euro and get a nice decent one. Thanks again.

On a side note, can waterproof cases (proper waterproof... submergable) be bought for the majority of cameras? I'd love to bring my camera with me when I dive

There are some cameras out there that have waterproof kits as an accessory and there are also some generic waterproof kits that can be used for a lot of cameras. Some of them are excellent however its still going to be nerve wracking putting your camera in it for the first time.
Canon have some that are excellent and so do Sony , these would be the top recommendations for a dive.
