hey all, im quite new around here so sorry if this has been posted before, i had a browse through old topics and couldnt find it in depth....ahem

well basically im posting to find out about employment agencies

1: are they helpful and worth going to if looking to secure full time work?

2: do they take a large weekly sum of your earnings? (what would be the average?)

3: can they terminate your employment and use/call on you when it suits them?

im a 20 year old male looking to get into a junior office role preferably data entry, i have 1 year experience in telesales which involved data entry after every call! :D

can't seem to find work and im starting worry,.....am i FOOKED?

any advice would be recieved gratefully ;)

ah the aul recruitment agency trail. Been there done that a few times at this stage.

    1) as with anything some are good and some seem like a waste of time. Personally I found Sigmar very good. Really followed though and I had a job in a week with them. Orange recruitment and DP Recruitment were good also. Didn't take a job though either of them but they seemed to have lots on offer.

    2) Not in my experience. I was still pulling in pretty good money. AFAIK they get an initial "placement" fee then another payment if you're there for 3 months etc and then if you leave to be employed by the company directly they get a "termination" fee too so they don't have to screw you on your weekly wage.

    3) Never heard of this happening at all and it didn't happen to me so can't really say.

Happy hunting. It's a pain in the arse but you'll get there in the end.

just out of curiosity are you refering to job agencies in melbourne? because this is Ireland....a nation that likes to screw you kama sutra style...every which way!

The agency gets paid by the employer, not the employee.

Not always. I've had four jobs via an agency - Richmond, CPL, TMP, Stelfox - and they were all taking a cut from my wages - AND MY BONUSES.

But in general, they take a large up front payment.

If I were you, I would try to avoid agencies if possible. They are more likely to let you down than help you.

I stand corrected. I have used agencies. I was never informed about this. I got 1 job through an agency but didn't have to pay them, the employer did.

Also I would recommend to avoid them. I have found them mostly misleading.
