Electronic Engineer - generally our contracts say we agree to work overtime when necessary for no pay. Some companies offset this by letting you take the time as soon as the project has met the deadline. Others don't.

I work quite a few extra hours with no pay but the job is extremely flexible so that makes up for it to large degree.

i work overtime and put a timesheet in for the extra hours, and i get paid time and a half for OT. im on a salary but it aint too hot so the way i see it is im not gonna work extra time for free! Maybe if i was on a big fat salary i wouldnt care but i aint...!

sometimes instead if i do an extra hour or two i might take it as time off instead.

    Im a Garda.

Standard sanctioned overtime is 1.5 but bank holidays and Sunday is double time.

Unsanctioned overtime such as dealing with a prisoner ,etc may be paid if they agree but usually time off in leu.

We can always take our OT as time off instead of pay if we want.

Management dont get paid overtime and have an 'on-call' roster in addition to their 40 hours.

    If Sanctioned:

Time+1/2 for Monday to Friday and Saturday morning.

Time+Time for Saturday afternoon, Sunday and Bank Holidays and hours worked between Midnight and 8am.

If unsanctioned: time off in lieu.

Overtime usually refers to extra hours which are pensionable. If the are not pensionable thay are generally referred to as 'extra' or 'additional hours'.

Ah good old 'salary' based jobs. If they dont pay overtime then get ready to work a lot of it! :D
