Too many tax credits

I was checking my tax documents last night, and I noticed that I'm still claiming rent relief, despite the fact that I bought a house over a year ago :) I just never even thought about it. Since I'm claiming tax relief on my mortgage, I guess I just assumed somebody in the tax office would notice.

How and ever, what's my next step? Is this technically tax evasion and I'd be a muppet to tell the taxman about it? Should I come clean and pay any extra tax I would've accumulated last year?

My advice would be to pay it now before it gets to big, they will cop on to this at some stage and make you pay.You could try and send a letter just stating you no longer need the rent relief and hope you get a lazy civil servant who just takes it away from you and does not look at your file to much.

You should definitely ring the tax office and get them to issue you a new tax cert. They would probably reduce your tax credit to make up the tax underpaid.

    Hope this helps.
