i'm only 17, but i've found a fairly large, solid lump in my breast.
going to go to the doctor fairly sharpish about it.

i know i can't get medical advice here, but i'm just wondering has anyone else ever found a lump?

although very uncommon, a few women do get breast cancer when they are in there late teens early 20's. As you have already said your besst bet is to get to a doctor as soon as you can and they will be able to check it out and give you a referal. It may be nothing but sure there is no harm in going to get it checked out.

I've got one on the back of my knee. Was fairly big but now it's shrunk. Went to the doctor and they reckoned it was nothing major still have to make an appointment to go to hospital not that I have the time to do these things.... pesky weird lumps.

Might not be the bad news you immediately associate with such lumps but at least a trip to the doctor will confirm either way and you can work from there. I do however know several people who have had scares and they turned out to be benign.

    Good luck.

First thing is don't panic! Easier said than done - I know I've been there - I was just a year or so older than you at the time.

When I found the lump it was just a little bigger than the size of a pea. I went to the doctor to get it checked out and she referred me straight to a specialist (I had an absolute mental freakout at the thoughts). I was waiting a few weeks for the referral (plenty of time for your mind to work overtime on the worst possibilities but try not to stress out too much about it - you are doing all you can).

When I did get to see the specialist, he examined me and thought that it was just a blocked duct/gland. He sent me for an ultrasound examination just to be sure (the radiologist later told me that mammograms aren't 100% accurate on young women under 40 as their breast tissue is firmer - remember that this was almost seven years ago now technology may have changed). Anyway the long and the short of it is that I was given the all clear - I still have my little lump - it hasn't changed at all.

Remember that you are taking the right steps in getting it checked out. If it happens to be nothing - which is most likely - great, it is a huge relief off your mind. If by some small chance it is something then you are doing all the right things to get it sorted.

If you can be of any further help please let me know.

Yes, happened to me, went the whole way to surgery to remove it. In the end was benign, tg. What I learned from the docs and reading up at the time was that young breasts tend to be lumpy (!) and your situation can be fairly common. There are dozens of harmless lumps it could be. My case was extreme, usually an exam or needle biopsy will get you an all clear. Its far more likely to be harmless, given your age. Try not to worry, get it checked out, is all. :)

Just to eco what others have said above. The same thing had happened to a couple of friends of mine and ex girlfriends. Don't worry about it (hard as that may seem) and get it checked.

    A.
