I have used optical for the last few years and generally used the desk surface to move the pointer.
But today i bought a new mouse ,microsoft lazer and with it i bought a mouse mat. I am wondering does it affect the mouse at all in the long run ?,it seems to work fine.

I got annoyed with the odd bit of dust making the pointer jump when i was using my desk with the optical.

Dust will still get on the mat, so the difference is (in my experience) negligible.

The good thing about mats is they are slippy, Good for gaming;)

The mat i got is not the slippy one its the hairy type.

It's got a fancy name ,fellowes microban antimicrobial product protection.
    Quiet nice for browsing actually.

it won't effect the mouse in the long run anyway (they're still meant to be used on mats).

Thanks astro ,wasn't sure whether the lazer needed a shinny surface.

A plain colour surface with no design is best for laser/optical. I find anything else makes them jump/skip/spin. Cloth ones are my fave.
