I'll word this carefully so as not to upset R-KEANE.

Does anybody know if private dealers on eBay tend to use the same courier service, and if so who is it? I'm asking as I want to know if I'm going to get screwed (metaphorically R-KEANE) by customs when it reaches this country so any information would e appreciated, cheers.

ok just posted this in the other thread
    afaik:

fade to grey: only got a few things on ebay.ie in the past few weeks, they all came by post, and the seller just adds the price of p&p to your bill.

In the words of a great man: "piss off and start your own pointless thread".

And for the amusement of others, thats coming from a guy who boldly stated "he started it".

Oh I know about p&p of course. I'm just trying to find out if my item will be held in Irish customs pending tax payment. Can I ask what the items were?

Cheers Timbuk2, but I don't want to turn this in to a war! In fairness I shouldn't have hopped on his thread in such a manner, but he does humour me :D

Were they posted in an envelope or a package?

    You bore me now.

What it comes down to is the location of the seller in the first place.

I assume since you're talking about customs, it's from outside the EU , likely USA/Asia.

Well it really depends...courier is usalluy more expensive than postal services and since that cost is borne by buyer, you'd be informed at point of sale, why the postage was so much.

Anytime I've bought from the US/Asia, I make sure and advise that I want the USPS (for the US) or EMS (for asia) to be used, with tracking...I have yet to get caught from duty/VAT using this method for electronic items.
All couriers no matter who they are will declare at port of entry and pass the cost on to you automatically...sometimes the item will be held for a day or two, I'd imagine for processing.

big heavy duty kinda plastic envelopes.....depends on the seller i guess

Nice one Wertz, thats probably the most informative answer I'll get since nobody can know for sure. The dealer is DealzPlanet if anyone has experience with them in particular.

    @ Femmy

    Cool, thanks.

    iAudio x5 eh?

Yeah I can't see that getting through unscathed....he/she seems to use something called global express, which is a USPS service, so it all comes down to what price has been put on the customs declaration. Customs aren't stupid.
Even if you do get caught, that's still a good price IMO.

Yeah I thought so too! Where did you find the information on the service he uses? I couldn't find it anywhere!

EDIT: Do you know what kind of fee I'll be looking at if it gets stopped?

    http://ircalc.usps.gov/intl_speed.asp?CID=10210&MailType=package&Pounds=5&Ounces=0

Standard rates of VAT (21%) and some duty charge I'd imagine...and it'll be charged on what's decalred...since it's insured, he's likely declared it for full value...the "marked as gift" thing doesn't fly too well anymore I don't think

Cheers, you've been a great help! Its on the way already so all I can do is wait and see!
