I've a bit of spare cash lately, seem to be doing well at the poker tables :D , so I'm looking into buying a computer. I'd prefer a laptop, but a decent PC will do.

I've been looking on Dell, but the offers aren't the best. I'd be willing to spend a maximum 1300 - 1500, but hopefully I can get a decent one for cheaper. I'll only be using it for internet and poker, but I would like it to have a USB port and a decent memory.

    Any ideas?

If your using a laptop or pc for that matter for mainly poker then the most important thing is the screen, go for the best and highest picture resolution this allows you to have more tables open without any overlap. I have dell inspiron 9300 with 17" screen and 1980 x 1200 pixel resolution, its perfect but may be a bit pricey.

If its for just poker then the processing power is not that vital either so you may make a saving there by upgrading the screen package and downgrading the procesor.

firstly decide if you want a laptop or a pc, this makes a big difference to price and performance.

I rather the laptop myself and have two of them, the first cost me about 1200 and the second about 2k, but this is used mostly for work. I've never had any problems with either of them and there both Dell, which I find to be the best and cheapest, so dont waste time shopping around for different brands.

Also, are you going to use broadband, or wireless or just a phone connection, this makes a difference in relation to the machine you should pick.

I would recommend a standard laptop, with good speed. I would also buy plenty of memory, as anything you save ie pictures etc, eat up space and you dont want to have to buy a new one next year.

PM me if you want me to pick one out for you online.

Acers are great value laptops and far nicer than dells, problem with dell is once u finish having to pick all the additionall extras it end up very expensive look at the acer 4005 up on my link €1500 you wont get anything of that spec for the same price on dell

Yeh I'd prefer a laptop, and we have broadband. I'm pretty sure its wireless, but we only have a PC in the house at the moment. This is the one I've been looking at, the Inspiron 9400

If you want to get adventurous you can buy the parts and assemble yourself at Komplett. I saved quite a bit doing it like that compared to what the comparable Dell would cost.

Has it's pitfalls though if you aren't a techie.

    i have a 9300 aswell...excellent laptop with a great screen

from my research Dell have by far the best prices for what u get...u will see cheap laptops but most are old technology basically built last year....at least with Dell its built to order

If you are just using a laptop for playing poker then you are pi$$ing away about €1000 if you pay €1300-€1500. I have an old NEC laption (PII, 64MB RAM) running Win2K with nothing else but the OS patches etc and its fine, poker clients take very little resources and if your plan is poker clients only then pick one up on eBay for about €300. If you are going to use it for ANYTHING else then get a better spec.
You will be doing very well to get a laptop or PC nowadays without a USB port so I wouldn't worry about that.,

i just wanna give you a quick word of warning on the acer's, they look lovely and when they're working they run awesome, but the one i had was an absolute disaster, constant fatal hardware errors and harddrive crashes all over the place, this coupled with me not being able to remember any of my 9 different online poker site password's which were all saved on it added up to disaster!

might have only been my experience but i will NEVER be going near acer again, customer service was average at best too!

Buy a basic Dell desktop for about €500.

If you want to pose get your photo taken sitting at a laptop OR buy a laptop carrying case and put a phone book in it and walk around town. :D

    Ask yourself -
    (1) Where will you be playing poker? If it's on the same table/desk then why do you want to spend an extra €1000 on a laptop? ;)
    (2) Do you have numerous broadband connections in your many penthouse apartments about town? Then you need a laptop. But if you had numerous apartments surely you would have a PC or laptop in each.

    IPOD, bottled water, mobile phone
    > laptop completes the poser kit :p

Yep, I bought a 9300 at Christmas for myself too, great Laptop. Highly recommended.

Make sure it supports 1600x1200 else multi-tabling will be a pain in the a$$

I am currently in Belgium so not sure about prices Ireland wise, but am just about to upgrade from my poxy laptop....
I will get a €400 basic celeron desktop PC (after all this will be EXCLUSIVELY for poker), and then I am going to buy TWO €300 19" monitors. It is relatively easy to stretch windows across two monitors using the settings in XP (I have an old 17" monitor that I attach to my laptop for dual screen play).
    Multi tabling is a breeze....
So for €1000 you can get all the screen space you need....
Why oh why go laptop? They look nice but.....

So you can play Poker; in the Sitting Room watching TV; in the Garden when the weather picks up; in bed if your too hungover to get up;in bed if you couldn't be bothered to get up; sure bring it to the toilet if you want. My Laptop is the best thing I've bought for ages.

IMO, I would go with 3 year service option. I invested in a bottom of the range Inspiron 1400 last year and the 3 year service option only cost a little over the 100 euro. In the top end laptops it is over 300. Anyway I got it mainly for playing poker and don't think I will be doing much if any multi-tabling in the near future so screen resolution wasnt too important for me. I've heard that a lot of the newer laptops are very reliable for a year or so but can give problems after that. If you are planning on getting a few years out of the laptop then better off getting the longer support. Alternatively if you save the 300 and the laptop packs it in after 18 months then 300 would go a long way to a similar replacement as it would low-end at that stage.

Sounds like someone bought a low end one.
either that or your getting comission from dell :P

    I have a Ferrari4005lmi
    15.4" Screen
    1680x1050pxl Resolution
    100Gb HD
And a whole range of extras.
I'm typing this post out on a 19" tft made by the same company.
    Multitabling is not a bother

    For cheap Acer

    For cheap Dell

Dont forget to check the weight of the laptop also. you dont want to be carrying round a brick.

I'd prefer a laptop over a PC, as they are mobile and I'm pretty wary of how much space I have in my room. I think I'm gonna go with the 9400
