Well, I got Oblivion last friday, enjoyed it over the weekend until all of a sudden I was being told 'the disc could not be read' and thrown to the dashboard with some advice to clean the disc. Brand new game, never been out of the console, and needless to say cleaning was no help.

So back to Gamestop yesterday, they replaced the game fuss free, back home to excitedly get back into it, and guess what? A day later I'm getting the same message and there's a couple of scratches visible on the disc when I take it out.

So I'm about to look up technical support again and see what can be done. Starting to get a little bit annoyed about all this!

Just to ask something you have done by now. Does it happen with any other games? :D

Ok this *might* be a false alarm. Apparently if the hard disk cache the game creates gets corrupted, the xbox will get a loading problem loading this and doesn't differenciate a loading problem from the DVD and the Hard Drive. Which is why same problem persisted across two DVDs.

So I've cleared the cache and played for a while with no issues. However there were visible scratches on the disc, but they were small and thats not uncommon on any disc thats had some use in any disc drive. I want to keep playing oblivion and make sure though before I risk any other game in the drive. If the same thing happens again I'm making sure I get a new xbox.

well if he did that, he would kill the disc, not just lightly scratch it

Have you tried clearing the hard drive cache? Turn on the console with the Oblivion disc in, and hold tha A button till your on the title screen. It seems to have fixed things for me, touch wood.

Its an known problem,Bethesda even officially came out with the clear cache thing.
Its been reported on IGN, Teamxbox...
Oblivion uses the Xbox 360 hard drive to cache game data and in some cases the info stored on the hard drive can get fragmented, slowing down the game's performance. Bethesda has already found out a way to fix the issue. Here is the official word:

Oblivion uses the Xbox 360 hard drive extensively to cache (copy and reuse) game data. This is done to optimize all loading the game does. It has been found in rare cases on some Xbox 360s that the cached data can get overly fragmented. This exhibits itself by the game taking a long time to load anything from menus, dialogue, sounds, objects, levels, and more.

To solve this problem, reset your Xbox, and hold down the A button as the game is booting up. If any button is held while Oblivion is loading, it will clear its hard drive cache, and create a new one.

Once you see the “Bethesda Softworks” logo video, the game is already loaded, and the cache should have been cleared.

Note, this does not effect your game in any way other than loading. You will not lose any saved data.

My 360 started to act up yesterday. I was playing Ovlivion and then all of a sudden the game froze, I turned the console off and i got the 3 flashing red lights so plugged everything out and set the console back up and the same thing happend again but this time blue lines appeard and covered the screen,

I tried Fight Night in it aswell and the same thing happend that. I have the 360 since launch and never any problems. I rang Microsoft and they are sending out the UPS tag as the fella on the phone said. I forgot to ask him do you send the Hard Drive in with the console does anyone know if you do? He said it will take about 7-10 days to fix or get me a replacement console. I would hate to loose all me saved games so I might buy a memory unit just incase....

They normally tell you to return the HDD with the 360. If you do, you will get a new blank HDD.
