Global Research Center Helps Wireless ISP Penetrate Jamaica

3/28/06 - Global Research Center, a third party research group, is conducting a Jamaican Wireless Feasibility survey on behalf of a wireless Internet services provider (ISP) planning to penetrate Jamaica with low cost, reliable wireless Internet services.

The feasibility survey is being conducted to collect information that will enable the ISP to serve the exact needs of Jamaican businesses, schools and individual end-users.

"Jamaicans currently find accessing the Internet difficult for two main reasons," said Julie Meyer at Global Research Center, "It is very costly and it is not widely available due to geographical restrictions and cost of laying cable."

The wireless Internet service proposed by Global Research Center's client will not only be available at a fraction of the cost of current Internet services, but will be accessible throughout Jamaica regardless of the island's geography and mountainous terrain.

The Jamaican Wireless Feasibility survey asks Jamaicans to provide information on the type of Internet access they currently use (if any), their main reason for accessing the Internet, the quality & cost of their current Internet service, and the kind of service they would like to receive in terms of Internet quality, accessibility and cost.

"By collecting real data on what Jamaicans are actually looking for in an Internet service, our client is in a position to better serve the needs of its prospects," said Meyer.

All Jamaicans that participate in the online feasibility survey will be automatically entered into a drawing to win one of four $3,000 JMD phone cards.

Global Research Center is a resource for businesses to conduct the primary research necessary to make critical decisions from product development, to branch office expansion.

I think the title is wrong.

"Study to see if Jamaica can get Island wide Internet by Wireless"

Looking at Google Earth, it does look feasible, but would need a lot of base station masts.

It's all quite hilly with seriously lumpy bits at the South East end of the Island, nr Kingston.

How many of the people have computers, though?

They are currently rolling out a city-wide hotspot in Philadelphia, where I live, and now that all the decisions have been made to give discounts for poor people etc. they are realising that people that could not afford net access can't afford computers anyway. Though strangely enough, they all seem to have sneakers and mobiles that are worth more than my laptop...
