I'm a complete novice when it comes to iMacs so be kind!

Turned it on today and no desktop. I've attached 2 pics of what it does if anyone knows what it means? It changes from image 1 to image 2 and then back and forth non-stop. The images are dead centre of the screen. No odd sounds of any kind.

Any help would be most appreciated!

    Thanks.

Looks like the OS is gone. Basically your system can't find the OS. There is one of 2 things you can do. Reinstall the OS or it could be worse and you hard drive could be faulty.

    Thats my experience in anyways.

If you have a system disk try and start up from that (put the disk in and restart holding down 'c') and try to choose your normal system in system preferences/startup disk

I'm afraid I don't have any disks at all for this machine. I just inherited it "as is" for free. It's one of the first generation of iMacs so I'll probably just give it away. Any takers?
