independent officials in club matches

I was playing a match the other day and i was disgusted with the referee that we got.Totally biased and didn't know how to call a decision.

Thats what brings me here to make a point. All club matches should have a referee and another independent adjudicator to monitor the match and the referee performance. How can u give a player a penalty for slipping or a line ball to the team that kicked it over the line.

So what does evrybody on boards.ie think?should there be another independent or just the referee?

Also,a referee should know basic life support and first aid.Somebody who gets knocked unconscious is a serious case.I had to put somebody in the recovery position while the ref looked on helpless.

opinions would be appreciated on this matter

from the sounds of it ye were just unlucky with the referee selected for your match. As for first aid - all referees should have a basic knowledge of first aid this is set out in the referee handbook. All you can hope for is that there will be a referee assessor at one of that referees future matches to point out where he is going wrong. As a referee myself you have to understand referees can have an off day and we all make mistakes from time to time

Will you volunteer to be a ref?
    Therein lies the problem.

As for "refs should know first aid" - its ridiculous, in my opinion, to put that responsiblity on to refs as well. Its hard enough to get refs as it is. You could just as easy say all goalkeepers should know first aid - no more ridiculous.

However, every team should have somebody (whether a player or mentor) who knows first aid - not to have someone like that is asking for trouble.

You cant expect an independent assessor to attend matchees as well as referees. because there simply isnt the numbers for this. Admittedly some referees arent of the highest standard, but without them there would be no matches at all, so we should be thankful that these referees turn up so we can actually have a match.

Maybe i'm over sceptical about some referees but I feel strongly about life support and first aid issues.

Its very risky to have two teams and a referee who know little or nothing about life support or first aid.Had I not put that player in the recovery position,he could have choked on vomit or his own tongue.I accept that there is little you can do when a player is knocked unconscious but these things can determine whether somebody lives or dies.

Absolutely blackbelt, but it is in no way shape or form the responsibility of the referee. Nor should it be.

I agree 100%, every team should have a mentor at their game who is specialised in this area

One question, was it a competitive match or a challenge?

I played in a junior league football match here in clare last weekend. The clare board insists on the junior leagues being reffed by "home refs" i.e. an individual from the home club (has never been a properly qualified referee in my 4 or 5 years playing). The game was played in atrocious conditions and we were afforded absolutely no protection from the referee. One of our players was closelined and a free was given against him for throwing the ball. The "referee" even pushed one of our players in an argument at one stage.

It's hard enough to get players to play sometimes (it's our club's second team) but this situation was ludicrous. We managed to draw the game, how I don't know (the fact that we introduced the referee who reffed the Senior County Final a few years ago as a substitute probably helped as we started getting a bit of a fairer return after this).

In these sort of matches the players' health and well-being is jeopardised, and serious injury could result. Matches often end in altercations due to players frustration at constantly being on the receiving end of biased decisions. Anyway enough of a rant from me, we've another away game to look forward to next weekend. I can't wait ;)
