where would I be able to get an audio driver for Windows 2000 Professional? I tried the dell website but they require internet to get it (that was not a joke btw, what I did was downloaded it in college, put it onto my memory key, and when I went home I tried to install it and it needed the internet to install it)

I tried a google search but none of the places I found looked very secure. if anyone has any advise it would be much welcomed

    Okay,
What "Sound Card" or model of PC have you? I assume it is a dell PC.
If so what model is it and have you a different sound card for it other than the onboard one.
The Dell website would be the best- are you sure you downloaded the actual driver file and not the webpage itself?
Can you point us to the link that you downloaded the driver from?
I have downloaded dell drivers before and been able to install them without an internet connection.
Dell used to provide (and still do I think) a drivers CD with all their machines? Do you have this?

well I do have a Dell pc, yes, it's Dimension 2400, I have not added anything to it (sound/video cards). here is the link I used to get the drivers: clicky I got a video one off there and it worked fine, it just installed, but the audio ones require an internet connection (I have only tried one, but the second one has the same icon, which has a big IE 'E' behind it, not a good sign.

as for the cd's, I did get some, most of which are just documentation, there is one which you boot up, but the first question you are asked is which video card you have, now while it may not mean squat whivh you choose I would rather be sure. I know there is a think got can input into the Run program on windows to check your system specs, but I cannot remember it, I think it is something diag.

after I posted the title thread I went to Download.Com and got a good looking program which says it will tell you what drivers you need, I'm gonna try it out.

undortunatly he problems do not stop at needing an audio driver, something is also wrong with my USB ports. I can use my memory Key no problem(thank God) but it does not detect my USB cable for my broadband, so I think I need a driver for it. (sorry about the length of the reply)

well I was wrong, it wasn't a lack of internet that was the problem, it was a lack of DirectX, but that got sorted last night, so I have the sound driver up and working, thanks, but the USB driver didn't help, unfortunatly, it still doesn't know the BB cable is hooked up. I looked at the properties for it and I need a USB net card driver, I have no idea where to find one of them, I tried google and I found nothing. once again, any help would be much welcomed

If you update your motherboard chipset drivers this should resolve the USB issue, it did for me.

that's great, thanks, I was looking at that earlier, but wasn't sure if it was what I needed or not

If you look up above where I linked to the sound card driver, I also linked you to the chipset driver which should have resolved your issue with the USB ports. This is the same file which TommyGun pointed you to so I wonder did you install it already and it is still not working?
    Are other USB devices working?
Is this USB port integrated onto the motherboard or an expansion by some means?
Also, do you have the drivers for your Broadband Modem/Device available as this may be this driver that windows is prompting for and not the USB drivers as such (I would say this for sure if I knew whether you had already installed the chipset drivers I pointed you to.)

    right, here's the update:

I found out that I have a driver at home for my USB ports, but it was made for XP, and I have 2000 professional, it said, when I tried to install it, that I needed Service Pack 3 to run, so I tried downloading it in college, bringing it home and installing it but no joy, it needs an interenet connection to install fro some reason, does anyone know where I might be able to order a SP3 disk? I looked on the Microsoft website and all you xan do is install it AFAIK, and the SP4 disk can be ardered, but only from America or Canada.

Kippy, that is good thinking, I will have a look now for a driver for the modem instead. the port is integrated onto the motherboard, and last night I installed software to pot photo's from a digital camera onto the pc, using a USB cable, and it works perfectly, so I shall have a look.

thanks for the help so far btw

    Okay,
First of all I would skip service pack three for windows 2000 as Service pack 4 is the latest.
    You can download it here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/sp4Eng.mspx
On the right hand side you will see options for "SP4 Express Installation" and "SP4 network installation".
Download the SP4 network installation one and take it home and install it on your PC.
You will not need an active internet connection when installing this service pack.
When you do get that PC on the internet I would recommend connecting to www.windowsupdate.com as soon as you can in order to ensure that it is completely patched and upto date as there have been a lot of fixes made available since SP4 and if you dont install them asap your PC will be open to virus' and malware. Also make sure you have an relatively up to date antivirus solution on the machine such as AVG which is free.

Okay, the fact that you can use your USB ports for the camera would point out to me that the port drivers are working fine, what you need are drivers for the DSL device for Windows 2000. Going to the manufacturers website would be the first port of call.

    Good stuff,
As I mentioned above, head to windowsupdate.com and get upto date. Dont install any driver updates from it though, just critical updates....
Did you find a driver for the Netopia?
    Kippy.

yeah, I updated my system first thing, even before I installed Firefox so I had to do it with *shudder* IE.

I used the driver that was on the re-installation disks I got with the pc, tehy ran only on service packs 3 or better.

    thanks again man
