    Im going to be teaveling for about a year and i would like someone to recommend a digital camera to me.

    Id like good quality pictures and a good battery life aswell as being fairly portable and a decent zoom (4x). Seen as im going to be traveling it needs to be fairly robust too.

    Thanks.

    You need to give more information. What budget ? What is your interest in photography ? To what use will you be putting the camera ? What features are important - compact, zoom, battery power, pixels, lens, picture quality, features, manual capability (allows you to be more creative), short videos etc...

    It pains me to have to say this but if you want something small, verstaile and compact then I'd shy away from Canon unless you can get one that takes standard batteries. I have only Canon's and I love them but... Canons tend to take proprietary batteries ... Why is this important? well - I do a lot of travelling myself and it brings me to remote places ... it can be days before you get somewhere where you can recharge so you need to option to use standard AA batteries ... to put it in context ... I have a Canon EOS20d with a battery grip (extra accessory) ... I was hiking up Mt Sinai early this year when I noticed my Canon battery was low. To my amazement there was a little shack at the top of the mountain selling AA batteries at 3am in the morning ... beat that for service!!!

    I recommend Nikon Coolpix 5600 ... great little camera ... lots of features, very compact, great pictures, 3x optical zoom ... I bought one for a friend who travelled to NZ last year and she loved it despite it being more than her budget ... you can pick one up for around $200 in the US ... Don't buy Camera gear in Ireland. Get it over the internet from Germany or the US ... or better still from Japan if you know someone travelling ...

    Have a look at www.dpreview.com for expert review of the cameras.

    You need to budget for memory also. Buy the biggest memory possible and always shoot at the highest resolution. Get a spare card ... memory cards are cheap ... memories of a trip are not!

    Another Tip - Get an MP3 player with USB 2.0 Host capability (note 2.0 is important, 1.1 is a bit slow) Aside from having your music everywhere ... this will enable you to connect your memory via an appropriate card reader to download and back up pictures, without the need to use a PC as an intermediate host. Leave some memory free to back up you pictures ... 30GB of music is plenty for most people.

    I have the iRiver H340 ...40GB (10 of which I use as camera back up), great sound, plays videos, radio, any format (MP3, WMA, WAV etc), displays slide shows of your pictures, compact ... but only USB Host 1.1 (sometimes called USB OTG) 1.1 is a bit slow ... it can take almost 1hr30 to download 1GB direct from a memory card reader ... and you do not want your battery to fail in the middle of this operation!!!!

    Hope this helps ... answer the questions above and you may get better advice ...

    Nah, the new 503 would be better.

    Seriously take a look at the Fuji F11 or give us more info on your requirements;
